I’ve been trying to devote Wednesday posts to fitness updates and related product reviews, and I’m especially excited about the review I have to share this week. For the past few weeks, I’ve been helping Best Buy test out the UP band and mobile app from Jawbone® by tracking my fitness, activity, sleep, and all the things that add up to true holistic health…AND I LOVE IT.
Here are a few words from folks at Jawbone:
Live Better. Start Now. Jawbone UP. Track your sleep activity, steps, calorie intake and more with the Jawbone UP wrist sensor and free mobile app. UP gives you meaningful, personalized insights so you can make lasting improvements to your everyday life.
UP is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background. The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward.
About the band:
- Tracks motion, distance, location and speed for efficient monitoring of your workout.
- Measures steps taken and calories burned to help you keep track of your progress.
- Comfortable watch-style design keeps your information within easy reach.
- Up to 10-day battery life
- Syncs with your iPhone to help organize long-term data (requires app download).
- Water-resistant up to 3.3′
- For use in most weather conditions.
- Measures steps taken, distance traveled and elapsed time.
Sounds good, right? But how does it work in real life? That’s the true test of a good product….and this one passes with flying colors.
I was a little underwhelmed at the thought of the review, to be honest. Another techy gadget. Meh. I figured I’d use it, but I didn’t know if it would have much of an effect on my life as a whole. I already run, I eat a healthy diet and I’m aware of my health after years of working in the health and wellness market, so what could it really do for me that I wasn’t already doing?
But I gave it a shot…why not, right?
WOW. When my UP arrived, I had the band on and the app in motion within about 5 minutes. It was so easy and barely took any real thinking (which is good, or I may have let it sit for days before I got to it.)
By that night, I was hooked and I haven’t taken it off since! Seeing that growing number of steps along with my calorie burn and how much of my daily goal I complete each day has set off a huge lightbulb for me.
Setting sleep and activity goals feels like a challenge, but I’m not competing against anyone but myself– and that really works for me. I’ve noticed that all of a sudden, every step counts. Another cool lightbulb moment: I had no idea I was already achieving my goal of 10,000 steps 4 days a week. Nice surprise! I also had no idea how often I was waking up at night, and how much of my sleep was interrupted. (Not such a nice surprise.) But such valuable info! My chiropractor was really interested in this, and he wants to see it as I continue under his care. (He’s buying one, in fact. Along with several of my friends!)
These are the screens you’ll see each day. One is sleep, the other waking activity. Seriously cool info that you can use to determine what you should continue, and what you should change. You’ll also get personalized insights based on your own trends, delivered right to your app each day.
See, I have an “all or nothing” attitude toward working out. I like to go all out, or not at all. I guess I feel like it’s not working if I’m not burning 800 calories at a time. But using UP has given me a new way of thinking about all those extra steps I can decide to take each day. Parking further away DOES help, and extra sets of stairs do add up. I have found myself dancing around the house, randomly sprinting in the yard and running extra stairs just to see those numbers climb…and they do!
My kids find it silly, but they’re seeing it, and my 3-year-old son is old enough to start picking up those habits himself. And he loves to check the app with me when I sync twice a day. “How many miles did we go, Mommy?”
I’m paying more attention to my mood, how my sleep (or lack thereof) affects me, what my daily trends are, and how great it feels to exceed my goals. Here are some shots of the app so you can see how user-friendly it is.
I don’t want this review to be all tech and specs. You can find all of that stuff here. I just really wanted to tell you about my experience with UP, and I can say without hesitation that I am more active, more aware, more inspired and even more well-rested since I started living UP!
What would I change?
Not much. There’s a place to track your food/calories and I can’t seem to figure out where the calorie expenditure from breastfeeding fits in. So there’s that. And it’s fallen off a few times in bed, which scares me because I don’t want to lose it. I wish the ends connected somehow to make it really secure.
I’ve been asked how long I’ll wear the band. I’m not sure, but I’m confident that it’s helping me develop lifelong habits that will stick with me whether I wear it or not. If you have any questions that I can answer from a user’s perspective, please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll happily tell you whatever I can.
UP by Jawbone is available at Best Buy for $129.99.
