Sustainable Hemp Clothing: Why it Matters

Disclosure: prAna provided samples for our review. All opinions are our own.

Who would have thought that buying clothes as a grown woman would be quite this tough? I think we can all agree that we don’t want to dress like our grandmas, and we also don’t want to look like our 14-year-olds. And then, once you find something you like that fits well and feels right, there’s the not-so-small matter of where it came from and what your dollars are supporting when you make that long-awaited purchase. That’s why I not only work to promote prAna clothing here on ABCs & Garden Peas, but I also shop with them on my own dime throughout the year.

Each season, prAna offers clothing that fits nearly any lifestyle. Body-conscious, fitted clothing, loose and comfy activewear, everyday pieces that go from the office to yoga class – you’ll find it all on their site. I originally found myself checking out their collection a few years ago because of the distinctive colors and patterns, which range from vibrant and energetic to earthy and subdued.

Feeling fun? Check out the Quinn Dress here. (I find that this one runs small, so you may want to size up.) This is my new yoga inspiration dress.

But the timeless, classy, casual look of prAna clothing wasn’t the thing that ultimately kept me shopping with them. As a company, prAna is focused on giving back in every way they can, and that’s the bigger draw for me.

In fact, their primary goal is to make sure they are always consciously giving back to the planet more than they take from it.

Hemp Clothing is One Path to Sustainability

prAna follows through on their goal in countless ways, but one important one is hemp clothing (and hemp blends.) While it’s technically not certified organic, their hemp is grown as organically as possible, with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers (making it safer for our planet as well as the farmers that grow it.) Believe it or not, hemp actually benefits the soil it’s grown in. That can’t be said for many crops!

Here’s a clip right from the source that will give you the lowdown on hemp, and why hemp clothing is an investment you can feel good about.

The Liana Sweater

I’m starting out my spring wardrobe this year with a Liana Sweater in Winter White. It’s become a staple in my wardrobe, not only because it’s a match for my yellow Kara jeans and absolute favorite Annexi pant, but also because it’s lightweight, breathable, and even flattering. I simply feel good in it, and I really don’t say that often.

The Liana is a blend of hemp and organic cotton, and it easily layers over a tank of any color for a versatile look that will work all spring. It even has those little prAna details that make all of their clothes feel special.

I’m a sucker for a good sleeve.

I wasn’t sure about the asymmetrical hem at first, and I’m more than a little self-conscious showing this pic online, but you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t want to see, right?

I kind of love it.

Feelgood Clothes: Each Choice Matters

Need a new wardrobe staple? Maybe a gift for someone special? Organic, hemp, sustainable and fair trade items are my go-to gifting choices because they create a positive ripple effect, right on back to the ground the materials were grown in.

See, my chickens even hang around more when I wear prAna. (Ok, that’s just silly. But my point = real mom, real clothes! prAna is “everyday wearable” for people like you and me. )

It’s true: prAna’s style caught my attention, but what kept it was their commitment to making the world a better place. prAna clothing (especially their organic cotton and hemp clothing) makes me feel great when I wear it, but even more than that, it makes me feel great about my choices and the bigger impact they have. I’ve been guilty of filling my closet up with clothes that didn’t matter – many that I found at a great price, but they didn’t bring me any joy when I put them on. More isn’t better, that’s for sure. Knowing that my purchase has a real impact that benefits more than just me is a real gift that matters more and more when I choose what I wear every day.

I’m a mom, after all, so call it multitasking at its best!
