A beach vacation just isn’t what it used to be. A million years ago, when I used to head to the beach on spring break with my friends, different things mattered to me. We went at the height of the summer, getting ourselves all worked up about who went with us and who we’d meet there. There was always some kind of drama, from tan lines and boyfriends to how I’d fit into my swimsuit. Sheesh, looking back, it’s no wonder I got a little stressed out.
We’re spending this first week of September at the beach, and I can’t help but notice how much life has changed. It’s a different season now. My little tribe of kiddos is the only group of people I’m worried about, and I’m the one chasing everyone around with sunscreen. No tan lines, here. And while I’m still admittedly a little bit concerned about that swimsuit, I’ve got bigger things on my mind.
Things like giving back more than I take from the world, and teaching my kids to do the same. Like making sure we’re actively seeking enough of life’s adventures, while also planning ahead and, for lack of a better word, adulting in the best way we know how. It’s not easy, friends. You know that. The day-to-day gets tough, and finding the time to slow down a little–and maybe even find a way to give back and make a difference–falls under “luxuries many of us don’t have.” There’s just a lack of general positivity everywhere these days, but what can we do? Especially if we want to be part of something good?
Sustainability Starts with …Yourself
It’s hard to stand in front of the ocean and not feel a bit small. Insignificant, even. But to two little people, I’m just about everything. Oof, it hits you hard when you really think about it. And lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about exactly whether all of this is sustainable. Like, for the long haul. Not in the context of whether we recycle or buy locally grown food, because we’re doing OK there, but in a bigger sense. Working too much. Health issues. Keeping my nose to the grindstone and forgetting to look up. Not treating myself the way I strive to treat my Mother Earth.
Those are my challenges. Do you know what yours are? Once you really see them, they’re pretty hard to ignore.
So this week, I sit at the beach and I reflect. (Yes, I’m working while I’m here, but I’m feeling thankful that I’ve earned that freedom, and I’m learning to draw boundaries. Baby steps, right?) Sitting on our balcony, wrapped in a cozy sweater as the ocean breezes blow and the evening storm rolls in, I’m reminded that the true good lies in the little things we do every day. The purposeful things. The mindful things. The kindness, the good example, the conscientious moves we make with our words, our moments of listening, our hard-earned dollars.
