My five-year-old’s latest obsessions? The new children’s book, The Itchy Book, and getting a new backpack to start kindergarten. Hold tight, because I’m about to hook you up with a chance to win both. But first, I have to tell you about this fun new book for kids, ages 6–8.. It’s the latest in the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! series. The series features collaborations between children’s authors and illustrators, and this book in particular couples a cute, easy-to-read story that keeps kids on the edge of their seats with vibrant, colorful illustrations that also give them lots and lots to look at.
A New Bedtime Story
A few nights ago, we read The Itchy Book before bed. My little one instantly fell in love with the big, friendly dinosaurs and their itchy antics, and we’ve read it every night since. (And no, surprisingly enough, she didn’t actually feel itchy at bedtime!) Each night, she finds something new within the pages, and I couldn’t be happier to have her so enthralled with a book about dinosaurs (instead of mermaids, unicorns or princesses.) I mean, much love to our sparkly, glittery, fantasy creatures, but big, friendly dinos are certainly a welcome change of pace.
The fun part of the actual text in the book is that it’s repetitive, pulling my early reader in and teaching her not only how to read the same words over and over, but also how to think ahead to what might happen next. If you’ve ever read the Sesame Street classic, The Monster at the End of this Book, you know the anticipation factor can really keep kids turning pages. This one’s definitely got it!
Even my too-cool-for-school 8-year-old was into it by the end. He wouldn’t admit it, but he wanted to know how dinosaurs scratch their itches just as much as the rest of us!
