Essential Oils for Winter Wellness

This post on winter wellness was sponsored by Nature’s Bounty®  Essential Oils™. All opinions are my own.

Are you using oils yet? We definitely are, and even better, we’ve found affordable essential oils that are great for our needs. They’re available at Walmart and perfect for diffusing!

It was our first day back from the beach. I woke up, put on a crisp new mustard yellow shirt, grabbed an apple from the bushel I got at the orchard and looked at the calendar.

September 1st. Fall.

Not quite yet, of course, but it’s coming. The colors are beautiful, the flavors are warm and comforting, the clothing is cozy. And despite it all, I can feel the world closing in on me, just a little.

Why? As much as I love fall and all it brings, I shut down just a bit with each shorter day. Each lost minute of sunlight reminds me that the dark of winter is coming, and each year seems to get worse. You might as well shut me away in a box and tape the lid shut. But what can I do? As a child, my winters were magical seasons filled with snowflakes and holiday cookies, and I want my kids to experience that without my winter ‘tude being a total downer. It’s time to find a solution, or at least a way of coping. Just a little bit of sunshine to hold onto, and I’ll be fine.

Essential Oils: Sunshine in a Bottle!

What scents does fall bring to mind for you? Cinnamon, apple, maybe pumpkin spice? I agree that they smell delicious, but it’s bright, crisp citrus scents that have the biggest effect on my mood in the fall and winter. When the weather makes me want to curl up and hide, a burst of lemongrass makes me feel as though someone flicked on a lightswitch. Citrus oils are perfect for making homemade body scrubs to invigorate your day right from the start, and I like to put a few drops of lemongrass (or grapefruit oil) in my toilet right after I clean it. Either will keep the entire bathroom smelling bright and clean for hours.

Ever find yourself dozing in an afternoon meeting or hitting a wall around 3pm? Lemongrass can help with that, too (as can peppermint, another stimulating oil.) My favorite way to use them is to combine with a carrier oil into a roller ball and apply a touch to my pulse points at times when I know I need to come back to life a little.

Essential Oils to Calm and Comfort

Just as essential oils can provide a pick-me-up, they can also provide a sense of calm and comfort when it’s needed. I rely on a pillow spray made with Nature’s Bounty Earthly Elements Jasmine oil, and as soon as I get some chamomile I plan to add that. Mixed with water, a light mist under my pillow is enough to soothe my soul and help settle my body at bedtime (when I struggle coming down from the day, which is often.)

The real test will be in January, though. I just found out I’ll have to fly across the country, and I don’t deal well with small spaces. You can believe I’ll have some oils along on that flight with me!

There’s a wide variety of Earthly Elements essential oils available for every mood and situation:

The beautiful thing about essential oils is how easily they get along with others. With a little experimentation, you can create a custom blend to fit your own unique needs.

I always read that lavender can have a calming and relaxing effect but I don’t like how it smells so I was resigned to not having an aromatherapy solution. I never considered jasmine and I love how that smells! Thanks for sharing your tip! Adding it to my Walmart shopping list right now…

That’s great! I would think that Jasmine would be a fantastic alternative to lavender. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the scent of lavender either, but I do love the effect is has on my kids at bedtime!
