Kids' Reading Room Makeover Inspiration with Carpet One #InspiredHome

This carpet and flooring shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #InspiredHome #CollectiveBias

Longtime ABCGP readers might know that this past year has been pretty chaotic at our house. Tons of flood damage, the loss of our basement, and the death of the (awful) green shag carpet that lived on our basement bathroom walls. Now that the ground is thawing, we’re looking forward to bringing in a backhoe to dig up the pipes in our yard so we can put this whole mess behind us. I’ve read plenty of advice pages on the 5 tips for choosing the perfect carpet and I’m super happy with the finished product.

But, there are a lot of repairs to be done. This unexpected project has pushed off all the other projects that we already had planned, like turning our attic into a new room for the kids. In fact, everywhere I look right now, there seems to be an unfinished project. I’m a DIYer at heart, but I know when to say when, and this is WAY beyond what we can handle.

Almost DIY Reading Room Makeover #InspiredHome

And frankly, sometimes I just plain don’t want to do it myself. Help is a good thing! (For some more examples of why not doing it yourself is the right decision sometimes, click here.)

As a former cake decorator, this #fail is my favorite:

That’s why we’re choosing our DIY projects wisely and leaving some of the bigger ones to the experts – like the carpet. We’ll be putting hardwood in most of the house, but the plan for the kids’ old room is a fully carpeted, comfy, tranquil reading room. We’re not quite ready to start yet, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start planning!

I’m starting with a color scheme from DesignSeeds – isn’t it gorgeous?

CeramicPalette

I think it makes a great gender-neutral palette and would be just perfect with weathered woods, textured fabrics and twinkling lights.

My next step: calling in our local flooring experts from Carpet One to start measuring and give us an estimate. Not only are Carpet One stores locally owned by folks in our community, but they offer a free in-home estimate, measurement and even design advice. I’m so overwhelmed by all of these projects that it’s a life saver to have someone give me a professional opinion on what works and what doesn’t, from inspiration to installation.

This might sound like commercial-speak, but when I call them my “friendly neighborhood carpet experts” I really mean it. The folks at our local Carpet One were some of the friendliest we’ve met, and we’ve had quite a few contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc. in over the past few months.

You can tell a lot by a person if they let your very talkative 5-year-old watch and help. 🙂

See that circle in the photo? That’s the carpet I’m leaning toward. It’s a medium gray called Mineral Ash. That’s definitely the sort of carpet that you won’t want to get any carpet stains on. Here’s a closer look:

The #DDIY Sale

We just happened to choose Lees® Carpet, which is nice since select Lees styles are up to 50% off during the Carpet One Don’t Do It Yourself (#DDIY) Flooring Sale (3/6 – 4/19/15).

I didn’t even know that when I chose it – I really just wanted something durable and stain-resistant for a kid-friendly room. Saving money makes it even better! And the selection…wow!

During the #DDIY Sale, you might even score up to a $500 instant rebate (10% off) on select hardwood, tile, laminate, LVT and more – just click below or ask for details when you stop in.

Here is a diagram of the room with measurements, provided by our Carpet One reps. It’s so small. You can see the clutter in the pic above, and those steps! UGH. They’re a super headache with a 2-year-old, and the main reason why this room will be so much better as a reading room.

I can’t wait to get started, and even though we have other projects to finish first, I can’t help but begin planning. And since the experts are taking care of the big stuff, that leaves me with more time to DIY the things I really want to do, like the projects in my inspiration Pinterest board. Just collecting and compiling all these ideas in one place makes me feel like I’m making progress! (Credit for the reading lamp in the photo above goes to SmartGirlStyle.)

Get to know Carpet One a little bit better on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and YouTube, then get in there quick while you can score some major deals on carpet, tile and flooring (and it all comes with The Beautiful Guarantee™ so you’re guaranteed to love it!)

Do you DIY? Is there anything you’d rather leave up to the experts?

I love the idea of turning this space into a reading room for the kids! That will be such a fun place for them to hang out! And yes, you can definitely tell alot about a company by the way they handle inquisitive children’s questions! Love that! #client

Wendy, I use those clip on shop light for extra light for my blog post photos but I never even thought to paint them and clip them to the head board. That is awesome. My husband has been knocking his lamp off the table lately and I think we need a new solution.

    I love your inspiration colors.

I usually like area rugs, but this room in particular has a weird particle board floor. For the rest of the house, I think we’ll be hitting up Carpet One again for wood and tile!

I DIY whatever possible. We’ve taken up carpet ourselves before, but I’d leave putting it down to people who know better.

I love leaving it to the experts. I have good ideas but they don’t always come out the way I envision.

I love your inspiration! I agree there are certain things best left to experts. I can replace toilet parts, but not the plumbing leading to it. I’ll hang dry wall, but not run electric behind it. I know my limits. 🙂
