Kids’ Craft: Easy Paper May Baskets

Are your flowers poppin’ yet? Ours are! And it’s nearly May, which means it’s almost time to share those beautiful new blooms with friends and neighbors by leaving a May Basket on their doorknob! It’s an old tradition that’s fun to do with kids because it’s not only thoughtful and kind, but if you do it our way, it’s a cheap and easy craft, too!

Create a easy and inexpensive May Basket, then leave it on a friend or neighbor's doorknob to celebrate May Day.

You’ll only need a few supplies…

Create a easy and inexpensive May Basket, then leave it on a friend or neighbor's doorknob to celebrate May Day.

  • sheets of patterned scrapbook paper (most craft stores carry it for about .20/sheet) You’ll get 2 May Baskets from each sheet.
  • 1/8″ ribbon, in several colors (ours was $1.00 per roll)
  • a hole punch
  • stapler
  • scissors

Cut each sheet of paper into 2 equal triangles.

Fold each triangle into a cone shape, like this.

Staple to secure.

Cut a hole in each side of the cone, either with a hole punch of scissors. (I don’t have a hole punch, which still amazes me. Total craft fail.)

Snip the very end off the cone ( about 1/4″).

Cut lengths of ribbon in different colors, about 1 yard long. I like to use 3 different colors, because that leaves you with 6 ribbons trailing from the bottom and I think that looks pretty without crowding your paper cone.

Create a easy and inexpensive May Basket, then leave it on a friend or neighbor's doorknob to celebrate May Day.

Thread your ribbon through each hole in the sides of your cone, then through the bottom, leaving enough at the top to hang from a doorknob. Knot the ribbon at the bottom to keep it in place.

Send your little ones out to fill with flowers, then share!

Leave them on your own railings, neighbor’s doorknobs, or anywhere that could use a little brightening.

You just might meet some new friends along the way! See our little bee?

Happy May!

My son loves to make and fill these, but yes…he can destroy them quickly, too! That’s why I made them on the cheap! 🙂

What a great craft, especially for this time of year. I am always looking for something fun and fairly simple to do with my fun bunch. I can practice with my own kids and then we can do the craft with our little ones at church. Love it.
