A few months ago, when I attended Natural Products Expo East as part of the New Hope Blogger Team, I noticed a lot of cutting edge food trends: nutrient-dense beverages, herbs and spices, lots of jerky and protein snacks. Expo East is such a great opportunity to see what’s up and coming in the world of natural food products!
One trend that really seemed to be taking off was one that surprised me a little: bone broth. I knew that it was something people believed in and made at home, but here it was, turning up premade on local grocers’ shelves! While it’s great to see nutritious options becoming more available, especially for us busy moms, it’s also really easy to make homemade bone broth on your own!
Homemade broth can improve digestion, boost immunity and improve nail and hair growth. Some say bone broth benefits also include increased joint health due to its richness in things like collagen, glutamine and other healing compounds that may reduce inflammation. On top of all the rumored health benefits, bone broth can be used in so many ways in the kitchen. Use it in a veggie-filled noodle bowl, a comforting pho, or just sip a warm mug of herbed broth instead of coffee or tea.
The most important first step in making bone broth at home? Choose the highest quality bones you can find. If you’re using beef, that means bones from grass-fed cows. Don’t settle for less! It makes all the difference in the mineral and nutrient content of your broth. The rest is easy–just a few simple steps and you’ll have homemade bone broth ready for soup, sippin’ and any other brothy creations you can think of.

very interesting Wendy 🙂 I had never thought of making it from raw bones. Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s living with my Grandmother that had gone through the depression and lots of hardships I learned to cook very economically. After a meal of beef, chicken, ham etc, we took the scraps, bones and all… added the veggies and made a broth just as suggested. I still do it to this day. It’s ironic I read this today as I have a pot of broth on the stove right now! Bridget, Doug, Me and the kids are coming out this weekend. Get ahold of Trudy or Kenny, maybe we can get together. Douglas has a wrestling tournament on Saturday.
So many of the newer food trends are just a return to older ways, don’t you think? That’s why they say “Organic food is what your grandparents just called “food”! Haha! So true. I’ll definitely tell Shane to call Ken. Thanks for reading, Suzanne!
I never knew it was so easy to make broth. I will get some grain fed bones and get started right away. The temperature is dropping to minus 10 tonight, got to get going.
