I have one brother. He and I are ten years apart, and we only lived under the same roof for about 8 years. I left home to go to school at 18, and by the time I returned (quite a few years later, to raise my family in my 30s) he was off on his own, a few states away.
These days, I’m firmly planted in Central PA and he’s…well, he’s pretty much everywhere!
Like lecturing in Croatia…
Vacationing in Kalalau Valley, on Kauai:
Or adjusting to his new home in Michigan, where he now teaches at a University. Here he is 1/4 mile out on Lake Michigan. (Hawaii it AIN’T!)
But cool pic, don’t you think?
I’m thrilled that my brother is seizing opportunities that I never did (lack of travel is a regret of mine, but I digress…) and oddly enough, I feel like he and I are closer than ever now that we’re adults.
And while I do wish that my kids got to see their Uncle Wesley more often, they definitely think they have the best uncle ever. They talk about him a lot, and my son often says to me, “Hey, doesn’t that guy look like Uncle Wesley? Do you think it’s HIM?” when he sees someone out in public with tattoos and a beard.
This is where I’m more than grateful for the luxuries that our current technology affords us. I might be a little *too* attached to my phone and other techy stuff at times, but with video chat apps like Skype or FaceTime, texting, Facebook photos and just plain old phonecalls, we’re able to keep in touch with my brother enough that my kids not only know who he is, but know him.
And that? THAT is a gift.
We’re looking at some special circumstances this holiday season. My brother has some conferences to attend and won’t be making it home to visit, and we’re not sure when we might see him again. We’re disappointed, yes, but as adults, we understand. The kids, on the other hand, just want to know when they get to see the fun uncle that gets down on the floor to play with them.
Once again, the magic of technology to the rescue! I’ll be snapping pics like crazy to text out to Michigan, and we’ll definitely be video chatting on Christmas morning. (Did you hear that Wesley? NO OPENING PRESENTS before Christmas!)
When I hear stories about my dad leaving for Vietnam shortly after he and my mom were married, with no contact by phone and just a few snail mail letters to keep them in touch for a whole year, I feel truly fortunate to live in a time when whole family can stay connected during the holidays – even when circumstances keep us apart. We won’t be in the same room this year, but we’ve got the next best thing! And we’ll do it all without running up loads of overage charges because my mobile plan is unlimited.
I’m impressed enough with what Walmart Family Mobile offers that I’m a member of their ambassador team!
Walmart Family Mobile – Keeping Us Connected!
Walmart Family Mobile service is $34.88/month for Unlimited Talk, Text, & Web ($29.88 for the second line) and it comes with 5GB of 3G Data. This higher speed bucket allows you to do even more with your plan (super important during this time of year, when we’re all shopping and staying in touch with our mobile phones!)
Seriously, have you ever seen a more affordable plan?
And during the holiday season (like, NOW) There will be a $40 Walmart Gift Card promotion with the purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Avant. The deal runs from 12/14-12/27, so there’s still plenty of time!
(Click the image for more details.)
I currently use the Samsung Galaxy S4, which I am really happy with. The super-wide, full display screen is big, bright and really impressive, 13 Mega pixel Auto Focus camera with Flash & Zero Shutter Lag, full HD video capability and the Android Jelly Bean OS that keeps it all moving smoothly, it’s no wonder Samsung calls it a “life companion.”
Whatever phone you like (even the iPhone) you can use it with your Walmart Family Mobile plan. Just have it ready when you sign up for your plan. Or, you could take advantage of the rollbacks Walmart is offering just in time for gift-giving. (And that can mean gift-giving to yourself if you want it to!)
We all like to stay connected – whether it’s to our jobs, our entertainment, the apps that help us be more productive and organized, or our loved ones far away – but nobody wants to pay more than they have to. With Walmart Family Mobile, you’ll pay one low price each month with no worry about overage fees. The #HolidaysAreCalling, and WFM is the answer!
