Is it just me, or does the spring bring in a whole new crop of kids’ birthday parties? And where you find kids’ birthday parties, you need to find kids’ birthday gifts. Ugh!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind them. My kids love going to parties with their friends and it’s usually a great chance for me to either meet other parents or see the friends I should probably prioritize more. The problem is time (and honestly, my organization skills.) I always seem to be running at the last minute to pick up a card or gift, and that usually doesn’t lead to something I feel good about giving. Plus, you know…budget.
I wrote a while ago about how we keep a stash of cards on hand for all occasions to avoid that very problem, but last year I realized that I hadn’t stocked up on nearly enough kids’ cards, or fun cards in general. So last time we were at Walmart, I fixed that by grabbing a bunch of the new ©2015 MARVEL Avengers kids birthday cards from the Hallmark aisle. One for an upcoming party, and a few extras to make our cards stash a little more “super.”
You’ll find just about anything you could want to put together a quick gift in the Hallmark aisle, but since my whole family is on a superhero kick these days (read: always), that was our focus. Some of the cards even have little gifts on them, like necklaces or pins featuring popular characters (like Black Widow, below) so often the card can be a gift all on its own. Or, you could grab a pack of Hallmark stickers to tuck inside, or include a gift card. All in one trip. Super handy.
But, if you have a little extra time before your next party and want to include a little something that’s both budget-friendly and thoughtful, grab a ©2015 MARVEL Avengers card and tie in this easy handmade crayon craft. It’ll be ready to wrap in no time, and what kid doesn’t love crayons, right?
First, swing by Walmart to grab your card.
While you’re there, pick up a few boxes of crayons (we used 6 per disc, 2 each of 3 colors), some stickers and a little gift bag –
…and get ready to make something cool.
First, go home and chop those crayons up! All you have to do is chop the crayons into small, evenly sized pieces, then put them into the cups of a muffin tin. I used an older tin that we don’t use anymore, but you shouldn’t have too much trouble if you want to use the pan for actual muffins again. You don’t even need to line or spray it. The crayon smell has never stuck with our metal pans, but silicon is a different story. If you’re using silicon, definitely dedicate your pan to either crayon-making OR food.
Here are the colors we used:
- Iron Man: red, black and dark yellow or gold
- The Hulk: 2 shades of green and black
- Captain America: red, white and blue
- Thor: Black or blue, red and silver
- Black Widow: Mostly black, a little bit of red, white or silver
Preheat your oven to 275 degrees, then bake your crayon-filled muffin tin for about 10 minutes, watching closely, or until crayons are melted. Once they are cool, they should just pop right out of the pans. (It’s best to let them fall onto a towel when you flip the pan so they don’t chip.)
Note: As you can see in the photo, I tried to place the stickers into the muffin tin first in the hope that it would “bake” into the top of the crayon disc. No such luck. The stickers ended up inside the crayons, so we ended up sticking new stickers on the outside after the crayons were out of the pan and cooled.
To dress up your gift a bit, tie your crayons in colored twine and wrap in tissue paper so they don’t break or chip in your gift bag.
And that’s it! An affordable gift that your kids will be proud to give, and you can get it all in one quick trip to the store.

What do you suggest as a kids’ birthday party gift?

There’s a lot of talk in the news lately about how therapeutic coloring can be for adults! 🙂
Man, those are awesome. My daughter is a huge Avengers fan and so are many of her classmates, although only a few have actually seen the movies because they’re so young. I love this!

Yeah, the age is a thing, isn’t it? My husband tends to break our rules for superhero movies because of the bigger lessons they teach about good/bad, but we do try to have thorough conversations about them afterward. Luckily, my son has never acted scared and he knows that if his behavior becomes aggressive, the movies are OUT.
It’s so hard sometimes to know what to do, isn’t it?
Who doesn’t love the Avengers? These cards look cool and I would love to make my kids their own Avengers crayons!
