Not too long ago, I told you all how I was hoping to plan a family vacation soon. It’s been one looong year, and some time away as a family is sorely needed. Like, NOW.
The only hitch? My husband is heading back to school next month and our budget is tight. Big, expensive vacations are out until next year.
Luckily, I live in the best state in the entire US – Pennsylvania! (Ok, so maybe you like your state, too. I get it. But PA is pretty incredible.) Within a short trip, we have big destinations like New York City and Baltimore, which means easy access to theater, sports, art, food…anything you could want. And within our state, we have even more great cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, each chock full of things to explore.
But there is ONE attraction above all that has us SO STOKED right now, and we’ll be heading there in a matter of days…

I grew up with the Sesame Street characters (pre-Elmo, of course) and now my son is, too. He has loved Elmo since before he was a year old, and now he knows every one of his friends by name. I try to watch closely and limit what he sees on TV, but Sesame Street is one of the few things I can let him watch without a second thought. The lessons taught on the show go way beyond numbers and letters. He learns about diversity, friendship, acceptance, and so much more.
And now he’ll get to see it all, up close and personal, during our family vacation to Sesame Place!
…and we get the added bonus of knowing that our dollars are staying right here in good ol’ PA. I can’t wait to tell you all about it when we get back! (And if he loves it as much as I suspect he will, we just might spring for season passes next year!)

Getting rid of plastic is no easy task, so I’ve found that it helps to do it in stages. Pick one thing, replace it with a more eco-friendly, non-toxic option, and then move on to the next.
Food storage is a great place to start. I can’t tell you how many of those horrid little plastic containers I used to have. The lids never matched up, they always got yucky stains, and I just hated them. When I found out that they were probably leaching toxic chemicals into our food, I hated them even more. I mean, who wants to spend tons of time and money making sure their food is as healthy as can be, only to expose it to toxic plastics?! Not this mom.
That’s when glass and stainless steel entered the picture.
While glass is great for microwaving, I really love stainless steel for packing lunches, and lately I’ve been using the Three-in-One lunch set from EcoLunchbox. It’s perfect for both kids and adults.
Pack it up bento-box-style, or send along a sandwich. Either way, your food will stay fresh and safe, surrounded by nothing but stainless steel. No chemicals to leach, no plastic to stain, no unnecessary waste to throw away. The latches hold the bottom two containers tightly together (and they’re kid-friendly, so no worries about whether little hands will be able to access their lunch) and the third container is great for snacks, sides or dips.
Now these containers do not have rubber or plastic seals, so it’s important to note that they can leak. I’d definitely use them for dips, yogurt or applesauce, but maybe not soup or anything with actual liquid in it.
I’ve been using my EcoLunchbox to carry my lunch to the office, and it’s so convenient. I love that it doesn’t take up a lot of room in the office fridge, because space is always at a premium in there. It’s perfectly sized for the appropriate portions so there’s no wasted space, and it’s easy to clean.

Wow…we’ve known each other this long, and I just realized I’ve never introduced you to my other baby!
I’ve been in love with my sunny yellow Kitchen-Aid mixer since my husband bought it for me last year. I love the yellow color, especially because it coordinates with all the lovely earth tones in my spice rack (and speaking of spice racks, I’m considering a wall spice rack now that this baby is taking up my counter space. It’s the only con I can think of.) I got it just as we moved into our new home, and I’m not sure I’ve even turned it off since. It makes cameo appearances in lots of my food photos, and I can’t put it any more simply than this: I LOVE IT. It’s marriage material. It’s song-and-dance worthy. It’s truly the best gift I’ve ever been given, and I’m so excited that it’s going to help me make years and years’ worth of kitchen memories with my son!
