I think I might have superpowers, and you can have them, too!

Let me explain…

Eating healthy with NO fridge for 5 whole weeks? Nearly impossible! But now that the new fridge is in the hizzy, I finally feel like myself again! I went out and stocked up on tons of fresh fruits and veggies, but I think I may have gone a little overboard. So what to do with all the extras? Juice them! My son, a cupcake, and a major parenting dilemma.

We just finished our third week of daycare, and things are swimming right along beautifully! :D

(Can you tell we’ve been watching a lot of Nemo lately?)


I expect that there will still be bumps in the road, and yes, there is a lot of crying in the morning during the dropoff. But – and this is pretty dang amazing, if you ask me – the director of the daycare has been sending me a text message when little man settles down (which is usually about 5 minutes after I leave) and she’s even been sending me photos on my phone! I’ve been able to steal of glimpse of art projects, snack breaks, and big smiles throughout the day, and it’s made SUCH a difference in my adjustment (it’s harder for us than it is for them, right?)

For this mama who works 60 miles away from that daycare, a photo to calm my nerves midday is absolutely priceless!

But then, on Friday, I got a different kind of text message. It struck fear into my very soul.

“Project today is decorating cupcakes. We’re going to eat them at lunch. Wanted to check with you to see if its OK. We can take him into another room if you want.”

Oh dear. Ohdearohdearohdear. What do I DO!?

Well, I say NO of course! I tell her to take my son as far away from those evil things as she can. Wrap him up in bubble wrap and don’t even let him hear you say “cupcake”!

Yeah, right. If only. (I did NOT tell her that.) I chilled out for a moment, and thought about it, and ran it by my coworkers (One of whom called me a food freak and mocked over the cubicle wall in his best teacher voice “Oh no, little man, you go into the closet by yourself and play with a carrot.” Haha. :| )

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that I go to pretty good lengths to make sure my family eats the most natural diet possible. We fall off the wagon once in a while, but when it comes to my son, I’m pretty vigilant. He gets his fair share of treats, but they’re always healthy, “real food” ones, and he really hasn’t had any cake other than on his first birthday, 11 months ago.

But it’s not the cupcake itself I have an issue with. Really. As I’ve explained to my mom a bunch of times – he can have cupcakes. And cookies. And ice cream. And all the good stuff that I sure as heck grew up with and loved. He just gets pure, natural versions of them.

I’ll admit: Cupcakes are happy food. Ingredients ending in “5 & 6″ are not. :(

And even though I knew (as my coworkers dutifully pointed out) that one cupcake never hurt anyone, there was one thought I just couldn’t escape: If you say you believe in something to your very core, what does it say about you if you buckle when that belief is challenged? Who are you, really, if you let that happen?

It’s fall! Eat a pumpkin!

One of the first and absolute best signs of fall? The arrival of all things pumpkin!

It’s all so tempting – pumpkin donuts, pumpkin butter, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin ice cream – you name it, they’ll be making it with pumpkin this time of year.

But you know what I look forward to most of all?

The actual PUMPKINS!

Few things make me happier than the first visit to the farmer’s market after all the pumpkins and fall/winter squash arrive. There’s just something about the feel of the fall harvest that makes me all swoony and nostalgic.

And even though I love all the things that can be made with this seasonal treasure, I think my favorite thing to do with pumpkin is just cut it into chunks and bake it!

Call me a pumpkin purist. ;)

Ok, so sometimes I do add a little bit of cinnamon or curry powder and a drizzle of oil to prevent sticking, but that’s it. And for about 3 dollars, I can cook more fresh, local pumpkin than I can even use (well, almost–we freeze some.) Just 1/4 of our first pumpkin of the year made 3 nights’ worth of side dishes and 2 lunches.

It’s a thrifty mom’s dream! And SO good for you, too! Just look at the color – it screams, “Hey! I’m crazy high in nutrients!”

It’s even a hit in my son’s daycare lunchbox! Bite-sized pieces of sweet, bright orange yumminess –what’s not to love in a toddler’s eyes?

So, before you add the cream cheese, heavy cream or brown sugar, I urge you to give fresh pumpkin a try in its original state. Start with an eating variety, like a Cinderella or neck pumpkin (and make sure you wash it well.) Just cut into small cubes, toss with curry powder or cinnamon and a bit of oil, and bake in a 375ºF oven until fork tender. Easy as pie! :lol:

One bite and you’ll understand just what good ol’ Ma Nature had in mind. :)

I’m craving dirt!

No, I don’t want to eat it, silly. :roll:

I want to dig in it!

Spring just didn’t feel like spring without our garden this year, and I’m thinking summer is going feel a little empty, too. With my husband in overtime, my work picking up, and our family getting ready to move in a few weeks, we decided not to put the usual focus on our garden.

It’s tough. When you love to garden, it can become much more than just a hobby. It’s a way of life. A way to feed your family, alleviate stress, feel productive, save the world. OK, so maybe I’m exaggerating. But only a little.

But as much as we both identify as gardening folk, we just didn’t see the point of planting what we usually plant this year. I wouldn’t mind so much if we had to leave some veggies for whoever may end up buying our house, but that’s a lot of time to devote to something that doesn’t bear real fruit for us. Time is a hot commodity these days, and we have to use it efficiently.

So in a few weeks we’ll be packing up and moving onto our new 6-acre lot, and there will be lots of gardening to go around. The herb garden taking shape in my head is just stellar. But until then, it just feels a sad to be missing our buds and shoots and blooms and baby veggies.

What’s our solution?

Well, we have two.

The first thing we’re doing is caring for a few choice plants that will help us feel “gardeny” while allowing our son some of the learning experiences we’re just not willing to let him miss. At 19 months, this is the perfect time to get him interested, so we did plant one little tomato plant for him, along with the dill volunteers from last year. (I even got a dilly bouquet today!) and a little spinach.

But the real star of the show is Little Man’s strawberry plant.

One potted plant, kept by the front walk. Every day when he gets home, he inspects it for new berries, which we allow him to pick (only if they’re red!) and pop into his mouth. He then fills up his tot-sized watering can and gives the plant a drink so it can grow more berries for tomorrow. Watching my son tend to his plant and snack on fresh berries, warm from the sun, is quite possibly on of the most gratifying experiences of my entire life. And nope, I’m not even exaggerating this time. :)

The other thing we’re doing to get us through this sparse year is exploring more local markets. We tend to miss them because we are too busy, or because we don’t need to buy more than we grow. But this year, we’re taking time when we can, as a family, to find out where the good local stuff is, and we plan to call and schedule tours at a few local farms in the next few months, too. I’m betting we find some real gems that we never would have found in a normal year, and we get to do our part to support our community farmers. It’s good karma, after all…you never know when we might be among them. ;)

This week, our local farmstand finds included blueberries, strawberries, cucumbers and green tomatoes. Can you tell they were a hit?

The No-Food Diet?

I’m troubled.

A few days ago, I was privy to a conversation between a few coworkers. It was right around lunchtime, and one coworker was ordering takeout. She asked if anyone wanted to get in on the order. 

I then heard two of the women involved say, “No thanks. We can’t eat until Wednesday.”

No food for 2 whole days?

Man, did my ears perk up….!

As it turns out, they are in the beginning stages of the Hollywood Diet. Now, my food mindset is worlds away from any kind of restrictive “diet”, so I am not familiar with the Hollywood Diet, but to hear them tell it, they have to drink some “miracle” liquid, and eat nothing but a few “miracle” cookies, and they are supposed to lose 8 pounds in a matter of a day or two.

I’m not sure if I have that exactly right (and they may not have, either) but I can’t imagine specifics would make a whole lot of difference. No matter how the diet goes, it just strikes me as sad. 

Seeing perfectly beautiful, healthy women talk about how to lose weight and “get skinny” without one mention of health hurts me to my very core, and frankly, it makes me kind of angry. We need to be setting a better example for our younger sisters, nieces, daughters and friends. And what I find REALLY scary is the fact that where there’s one woman with this attitude toward weight loss, there is usually a whole group willing to join in the diet with her. 

It’s so discouraging. 

And then, there’s the new diet drug, Qnexa, that I keep hearing about on the news.

What I took from the newscast I saw was:

  • There is a new weight loss drug coming to the market.
  • This time it’s really supposed to work! (Big, fat WHATEVER to that…)
  • It contains Fentermine, the Fen of Fen-Phen fame infamy.

OK. Yeah, THAT sounds like a good idea. Sign me up for a bottle. What could go wrong?

What’s even better, it seems that we have THREE new diet drugs coming our way!

What the %#*? is going on!!??

Haven’t we gotten past all this? Haven’t we made PROGRESS? And then I remember that not everyone takes advantage of the great, supportive community of healthy lifestyle bloggers that I am lucky enough to have on my side. ;)

There are very few things in life that I know for sure, but I am certain that skinny doesn’t equal healthy, and neither will ever be found in a pill or empty plate. 

It’s really, really difficult to keep my mouth shut when I hear conversations like the one I heard at work. I want to butt in and spout off and ask them if they have ever heard of whole grains and clean, whole foods and water and fruits and veggies and NO SODA! I want to shake them and tell them that, for years, this fad diet garbage has been peddled to women with poor self esteem and body image issues, and they shouldn’t buy into it. But most of all, I want to tell them that they are worth more than the size of their pants, and that they are beautiful just the way they are, and that health should be their main priority for the sake of their children, if nothing else.

But I don’t do those things. I’m already the one in my office who is a little different, a little strange, because of the way I eat and the choices I make. So I don’t make waves, but I do plant seeds.

I continue to bring things like my quinoa berry salad (and tolerate the disgusted faces people make when they ask what it is) and banana, like I did today, and say, “No, thanks” when someone offers me something that I don’t feel good about eating, because good sense tells me there is only one true way to achieve good health and an appropriate, comfortable weight:

I do not, by any stretch of the imagination, have it all figured out, nor am I an extreme “health nut.”

I slip up on my health goals nearly every day, and I’ll admit that one of my biggest fears about stating my beliefs is that someone will look at me and think I’m not thin enough to actually practice what I preach…that I’m a big fraud.

And maybe I’m just a wee bit jealous that folks aren’t as eager to jump on my bandwagon as they are to drink miracle elixers and look for easy fixes, but I do strive to set the best example I can in the hopes that one day one of those women just might ask me for a recipe.
