Recalls Plus: Putting the recall info you need at your fingertips

As parents, most of us put a great deal of time and effort into choosing what we buy for our children. From food to toys to baby gear, we want the safest, highest quality products we can afford…and when we spend do choose products for our little ones, we want to be able to put our trust in them.

Unfortunately, product recalls are all too common these days. Who would have thought that choosing natural and organic peanut butter products would pose a health hazard? But we all know about the recent recall. And then there’s the Bumbo baby chair, recalled by CPSC 5 years ago, but still allowed to be sold on the market with only a few more warning labels. Since then, many children have suffered by the hands of this flawed product. It’s scary, but it happens all the time.

In a perfect world, recalls wouldn’t happen. But realistically, we have to be aware of them. How did you hear about the peanut butter recall? Do you remember? I heard it in the news because it was so widespread, but many, many recalls are easily missed. I mean, how many of us have time to keep up with things like that every day?!

Now there’s a way to get all the recall information you need, when you need it…delivered right to your fingertips!

Designed by parents for parents, Recalls plus will monitor recalls on your children’s items. A few of the useful features include:

• Checklists by age:
Select an age range to choose common products in the Newborn, Infant, and Toddler categories,
• Add any product you have, or plan to have:
Track recalls on items you already own or plan to buy. For example, Britax car seat, a Graco stroller, etc.
• It even tracks foods:
Select from 8 FDA-mandated food allergies to get alerts on related food recalls. (For example, eggs, fish and peanuts.) This one is especially important, especially for kids with severe food allergies. An alert can truly make a life or death difference.
Recalls plus will only alert you when a related recall applies for one of the products or food allergens you have listed. You can also browse the nationwide list of recalls reported by top government agencies.

Recalls Plus tracks the most relevant and recent recalls through four Federal agencies in the US:

• Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
• Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
• United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

The app then matches recalls to your list, and voila! You are notified. Couldn’t be easier!

Here’s what you’ll see if you have an iPhone…

and a screenshot of the Android App…

The apps are clear and understandable, which is a welcome feature for this time-starved mom! If something takes too long to figure out, I usually lose interest in a hurry. (Hard to use = not convenient!)

In 2011, 121 recalls of children’s products were recalled in the United States, which accounted for 11.63 million units of product. Of those 121 children’s product recalls: 36 Nursery Related Items, 32 Clothing Items, 26 Toys, 14 Outdoor & Sports products, 6 Furniture, 5 Miscellaneous and 2 Jewelry related products.**

Pretty eye-opening, isn’t it? From now on, I’m using Recalls plus to help me stay on top of the recall info I need. I hope you’ll consider doing the same! You can download the app for free in the Apple App Store, Google Play or as an app for Facebook.
