Don’t you love it when you find a company that just gets it?
A company that produces exactly the product you’re looking for, and does it because they genuinely care about your child?
Yeah, when that happens, it’s pretty awesome.
And guess what! It just happened to me!
When life gets busy, it’s easy to let the non-essentials slide. But I know that creativity is so vital to a well-rounded life, so I’ve been making a more concerted effort to work art into our daily free time. It doesn’t take long, and the look of pride on my little man’s face when he gives his Grammie a project he made always reminds me just how important it is.
But just like art is important, so are safe, non-toxic art supplies. And BOY are they not easily found on store shelves….
So, I started hunting…and I found WeeCanToo Art Supplies!
WeeCanToo is a small (yet booming!) company that was founded in 2007 with the sole purpose of bringing safe art products to your children. All WeeCanToo products, from sidewalk chalk to fingerpaints to egg dyes, are 100% all-natural, organic, and vegan. The vibrant colors come from ingredients like spinach, blueberries, pumpkin and lots of other fruits and veggies. How fun, right?! Don’t these look kind of like cake rolls?
As we moms know all too well, whatever goes on your baby’s hands inevitably ends up in your baby’s mouth, and with these art supplies, you don’t have to worry! Each product is edible – not meant to be eaten, but safe to be eaten, so your baby can create freely!
Too good to be true? Nope. I was afraid these products wouldn’t work, or would have weird textures or something, but they are all fantastic! I love the tottle set of fingerpaints, and I was especially impressed with the beautiful colors! Of course they are slightly muted in comparison to conventional art supplies, but I think they are absolutely beautiful and just so real.
I feel like the moms at WeeCanToo sent a little love from their hearts straight to my little boy, and that’s a wonderful gift. Many thanks to them for helping to make art fun and safe for our little ones!

Plastic. It’s a heck of a thing.
Have you ever tried to do away with it? Just not use plastic things any more? It’s hard. No matter how dedicated you are to greening up your life, cutting out plastic is really hard. It’s everywhere. Especially when you’ve got small kids around.
Some things are easy. I pack my lunch in stainless steel storage containers now, and I use a Klean Kanteen water bottle, and some other Eco 101 type stuff. But some things are harder to replace. Toothbrush? Storage totes? Durable – yet cute – tableware for your toddler…
Oh wait, I got that one covered.
Introducing: Re-Play Recycled Tableware for your little ones!
Bring it on, 2012. I have big plans for the new year. Probably too big, but it can’t hurt to aim high right?
One thing on my lengthy list is to simply stick to my guns on things like making my home as greentastic as it can possibly be. Developing a strong eco-conscious is a journey that certainly has its ups and downs, and it really helps me to reaffirm my commitment once in a while.
So there. Reaffirmation has begun.
Now, on to business. One paradox I’ve noticed since getting rid of toxic household products is that while I do miss lovely scented candles (pumpkin! sugar cookie! cinnamon stick!) and room sprays, I’ve become really sensitive to them when I do come in contact with them now. Especially when it comes to laundry. So I was excited to give Tropical Traditions powdered laundry detergent a go.
Tropical Traditions, as a company, is dedicated to offering high quality, eco-friendly, natural products, and this laundry detergent is one of them. The ingredients panel lists soda ash, sodium percarbonate, and mild surfactants. That’s it. No perfumes or fragrances, no dyes and no phosphates, and that means nothing to harm the environment when it decomposes. And, it leaves your clothes smelling like clothes, and nothing more. It’s safe for the environment, and safe for your family.
But does it get them clean, you ask? Yes! TT detergent safely cleans all types of clothes (except silk or wool) in all temperatures. Just add it to the washer while it’s filling, load with clothes, and wash.
Right now, you can get 5lb of Tropical Traditions powdered laundry detergent for the special low price of only $16.99! Visit their website to order now.
TT has offered ABCGP readers the chance to win their own 5lb container of laundry detergent!

It’s no secret that I love Tropical Traditions coconut oil, and I also adore Tropical Traditions organic thick rolled oats (my favorite oats ever!)
So I was more than open to the idea of trying another Tropical Traditions product, especially after my recent promise to myself that I would work on using more natural health and beauty care products.
Of all the products I use over the course of my day, I would have to say that is the hardest to replace with a natural alternative is deodorant. Why? Because your deodorant has to work.
And if it doesn’t? Well, that just stinks.
But since I’m still nursing, and still trying to conceive baby #2, it’s more important than ever to me that I don’t put scary toxic ingredients on my underarms (one of the most absorbent parts of the body) or anywhere else, for that matter!
Since I was used to buying pantry items from their online store, I was surprised to find out that Tropical Traditions carried a deodorant that fit the bill. What a nice surprise! Their natural deodorants are chemical-free, paraben-free and aluminum-free, and the base of the formula is their organic virgin coconut oil (which I already use on my body every day.)
The sample I received was the (very pretty) Lavender scent, which includes:
ingredients: purified water, organic Virgin Coconut Oil, organic jojoba, plant based emulsifying wax, grapefruit seed extract, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and organic essential oils of lavender, lemon, and rosemary. (Other scents include Classic and Frankincense.)
I have to admit, at first I wasn’t sure how this stuff worked. I felt a little self-conscious the first day I wore it to work (probably should have used it on a weekend to start.) My old deodorant worked for me for years and I never smelled a thing, but with this product I did notice a little more perspiration than normal. Not that it left me sweaty – just enough that I noticed (I’m pretty sure I was the only one…)
But now, after having used it for a few weeks, I don’t notice any weirdness anymore. I really think the body just requires an adjustment period to a new deodorant – especially after more years than I’d like to admit using a mainstream version. I’m not sure Tropical Traditions deodorant would be the right thing to wear for an intense workout, but it’s very suitable, comfortable and reliable for day-to-day use – which I think is a fair trade-off for the peace of mind that comes from using a much, much safer product.
