Helping you green your laundry routine

Bring it on, 2012. I have big plans for the new year. Probably too big, but it can’t hurt to aim high right?

One thing on my lengthy list is to simply stick to my guns on things like making my home as greentastic as it can possibly be. Developing a strong eco-conscious is a journey that certainly has its ups and downs, and it really helps me to reaffirm my commitment once in a while.

So there. Reaffirmation has begun. :)

Now, on to business. One paradox I’ve noticed since getting rid of toxic household products is that while I do miss lovely scented candles (pumpkin! sugar cookie! cinnamon stick!) and room sprays, I’ve become really sensitive to them when I do come in contact with them now. Especially when it comes to laundry. So I was excited to give Tropical Traditions powdered laundry detergent a go.

Tropical Traditions, as a company, is dedicated to offering high quality, eco-friendly, natural products, and this laundry detergent is one of them. The ingredients panel lists soda ash, sodium percarbonate, and mild surfactants. That’s it. No perfumes or fragrances, no dyes and no phosphates, and that means nothing to harm the environment when it  decomposes. And, it leaves your clothes smelling like clothes, and nothing more. It’s safe for the environment, and safe for your family.

But does it get them clean, you ask? Yes! TT detergent safely cleans all types of clothes (except silk or wool) in all temperatures. Just add it to the washer while it’s filling, load with clothes, and wash.

Buy it!

Right now, you can get 5lb of Tropical Traditions powdered laundry detergent for the special low price of only $16.99! Visit their website to order now.

Win it!

TT has offered ABCGP readers the chance to win their own 5lb container of laundry detergent!

Crunchmaster Multi-grain Crackers: Snacking love, and a giveaway!

Ah, snacking. It really gets a bad rap, doesn’t it?

I love snacks. All kinds. Sure, there are snacks that deserve our scorn (yeah, I’m talking to YOU, Extreme Cookies and Cream!) But there are others that make up for it. Delicious, feel-good snacks that give you that crunchy, snacky satisfaction without all the guilt.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to introduce you to Crunchmaster Multi-grain Crackers!

I know, I know. A cracker might not sound all that exciting. After all, it’s just a vehicle for whatever yummy cracker-topper you’re loading it with, right? Wrong! I’m a firm believer that no matter how good the dip or cheese may be, if you start out with an inferior vehicle, well, it’s all down hill from there.

No such worries with these babies. I served them recently at my son’s 2nd birthday party, and everyone loved them. The white cheddar flavor was the runaway favorite (especially dipped in the guacamole and spinach dips) and my husband and little man have been crunchin’ on them ever since! (Toddler-friendly = bonus!)

Why I think YOU might like Crunchmaster crackers:

  • They have a unique texture, kind of like those super-crunchy Japanese rice snacks. Stands up well to any kind of dip, with no chance of sogginess.
  • They are oven-baked and have 65% less fat than regular multi-grain chips.
  • They are a good source of fiber, free of saturated fat and cholesterol, certified gluten-free and contain 21 g of whole grains per serving
  • Most importantly to me, many of the items Crunchmaster produces, including the original flavor multi-grain crackers, are certified GMO-free!

Not bad, right? Now let’s get down to business…how can YOU try them?

You could check your local grocery store, because they’re available nationwide (4.5 oz. for $2.50 to $3.99, 20 oz. for $7.48 to $7.59) or, you could enter to win a whole case of certified gluten-free white cheddar Crunchmaster crackers right here at ABCGP! Woot!

Just enter using the easy Rafflecopter form below! Happy crunching! :)

Changing Diapers: Review and Fuzzibunz Giveaway!

Kelly Wels is on a mission to change your diapers.

Ok, maybe not your diapers. That would be silly.

She’s on a mission to change the type of diapers you use. Unless you already use one of the many, many varieties of easy-to-use and uh-freakin’-dorable modern cloth diapers on the market–then she’s on a mission to make you feel like the coolest mom on Earth.

Either way, I think she’s succeeding. After reading through her new book, Changing Diapers: The Hip Mom’s Guide to Cloth Diapering, I’m feeling pretty hip and eco-fabulous, and if I didn’t already love cloth, the fluffy bums pictured in the book would change my mind for sure! :D

Have you ever considered using cloth? Have questions? Come on – admit it. You’re wondering what happens to poop in your washing machine, right? Or maybe you’re worried about the “stink factor.” No matter what your questions or concerns might be, you can bet Kelly addresses them in this book.

I wish I had had a guide like this when I first started out. The choices were mind-boggling. Prefold? All-in-one? Pocket? Fitted with a cover? Hemp, bamboo, microfleece, PUL? What did it all mean? I was sure I wanted to try cloth, but also very sure I didn’t want to waste my money trying 25 different types before I landed on one I liked.

This book addresses that very issue perfectly, along with every other issue pertinent to cloth, in a relatable, understandable, friendly voice. The voice of another mother who really wants to make a difference. You’ll learn how to choose, how to clean, how to deal with nighttime, as well as details about different brands, accessories, the eco-benefits, helpful cloth diapering bloggers and so much more. Plus, you’ll find tons of fluffy baby bottoms that are reason enough to give cloth a try!

It’s hard to explain the heartwarming feeling of hanging your cute little dipes on the line to get some sun, or the feeling of knowing that your child’s most delicate parts are not wrapped up in toxic chemicals and plastic. With modern-day cloth, wet, poopy diapers actually verge on fun. No joke.

Join the movement! Just click the banner below (or the button on my sidebar) and get your very own 248 full-color pages of pure fluffy love! ….makes a great stocking stuffer or shower gift!

Have I convinced you to try cloth? Are you already a fluff addict? You’re in luck! Kelly has also offered one lucky reader ONE FUZZIBUNZ ONE-SIZE DIAPER and one “I’m a hip mom and love cloth diapers” ECO-FRIENDLY TATTOO!

Enter to win using the simple Rafflecopter form below.

The only mandatory entry is the first one on the form: Leave me a comment below telling me why you love cloth diapering OR why you’d like to give it a try. Make sure to leave your email address!

Win Aluminum-free Deodorant from Tropical Traditions! Ends 8.1

It’s no secret that I love Tropical Traditions coconut oil, and I also adore Tropical Traditions organic thick rolled oats (my favorite oats ever!)

So I was more than open to the idea of trying another Tropical Traditions product, especially after my recent promise to myself that I would work on using more natural health and beauty care products.

Of all the products I use over the course of my day, I would have to say that is the hardest to replace with a natural alternative is deodorant. Why? Because your deodorant has to work.

And if it doesn’t? Well, that just stinks.

But since I’m still nursing, and still trying to conceive baby #2, it’s more important than ever to me that I don’t put scary toxic ingredients on my underarms (one of the most absorbent parts of the body) or anywhere else, for that matter!

Since I was used to buying pantry items from their online store, I was surprised to find out that Tropical Traditions carried a deodorant that fit the bill. What a nice surprise! Their natural deodorants are chemical-free, paraben-free and aluminum-free, and the base of the formula is their organic virgin coconut oil (which I already use on my body every day.)

The sample I received was the (very pretty) Lavender scent, which includes:

ingredients: purified water, organic Virgin Coconut Oil, organic jojoba, plant based emulsifying wax, grapefruit seed extract, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and organic essential oils of lavender, lemon, and rosemary. (Other scents include Classic and Frankincense.)

I have to admit, at first I wasn’t sure how this stuff worked. I felt a little self-conscious the first day I wore it to work (probably should have used it on a weekend to start.) My old deodorant worked for me for years and I never smelled a thing, but with this product I did notice a little more perspiration than normal. Not that it left me sweaty – just enough that I noticed (I’m pretty sure I was the only one…)

But now, after having used it for a few weeks, I don’t notice any weirdness anymore. I really think the body just requires an adjustment period to a new deodorant – especially after more years than I’d like to admit using a mainstream version. I’m not sure Tropical Traditions deodorant would be the right thing to wear for an intense workout, but it’s very suitable, comfortable and reliable for day-to-day use – which I think is a fair trade-off for the peace of mind that comes from using a much, much safer product.

Want to try Tropical Traditions aluminum-free deodorant for yourself?
