Changing Diapers: Review and Fuzzibunz Giveaway!

Kelly Wels is on a mission to change your diapers.

Ok, maybe not your diapers. That would be silly.

She’s on a mission to change the type of diapers you use. Unless you already use one of the many, many varieties of easy-to-use and uh-freakin’-dorable modern cloth diapers on the market–then she’s on a mission to make you feel like the coolest mom on Earth.

Either way, I think she’s succeeding. After reading through her new book, Changing Diapers: The Hip Mom’s Guide to Cloth Diapering, I’m feeling pretty hip and eco-fabulous, and if I didn’t already love cloth, the fluffy bums pictured in the book would change my mind for sure! :D

Have you ever considered using cloth? Have questions? Come on – admit it. You’re wondering what happens to poop in your washing machine, right? Or maybe you’re worried about the “stink factor.” No matter what your questions or concerns might be, you can bet Kelly addresses them in this book.

I wish I had had a guide like this when I first started out. The choices were mind-boggling. Prefold? All-in-one? Pocket? Fitted with a cover? Hemp, bamboo, microfleece, PUL? What did it all mean? I was sure I wanted to try cloth, but also very sure I didn’t want to waste my money trying 25 different types before I landed on one I liked.

This book addresses that very issue perfectly, along with every other issue pertinent to cloth, in a relatable, understandable, friendly voice. The voice of another mother who really wants to make a difference. You’ll learn how to choose, how to clean, how to deal with nighttime, as well as details about different brands, accessories, the eco-benefits, helpful cloth diapering bloggers and so much more. Plus, you’ll find tons of fluffy baby bottoms that are reason enough to give cloth a try!

It’s hard to explain the heartwarming feeling of hanging your cute little dipes on the line to get some sun, or the feeling of knowing that your child’s most delicate parts are not wrapped up in toxic chemicals and plastic. With modern-day cloth, wet, poopy diapers actually verge on fun. No joke.

Join the movement! Just click the banner below (or the button on my sidebar) and get your very own 248 full-color pages of pure fluffy love! ….makes a great stocking stuffer or shower gift!

Have I convinced you to try cloth? Are you already a fluff addict? You’re in luck! Kelly has also offered one lucky reader ONE FUZZIBUNZ ONE-SIZE DIAPER and one “I’m a hip mom and love cloth diapers” ECO-FRIENDLY TATTOO!

Enter to win using the simple Rafflecopter form below.

The only mandatory entry is the first one on the form: Leave me a comment below telling me why you love cloth diapering OR why you’d like to give it a try. Make sure to leave your email address!

Look out, Potty! Here we come!

I knew this time would come…eventually.

My 23-month-old son has shown quite an interest in the potty for a while now, peeing occasionally, and throwing lots of paper in when we aren’t looking.

But now? We have POOP!

Not every time, but often enough to know that he’s well on his way to learning how to use the potty full-time.

So, why do I feel a stinging twinge of sadness?

Because I’ll miss my FLUFF!

The stash I researched so diligently and worked so hard to build (building a community of like-minded friends along the way, I might add! Bonus!) The stash I painstakingly laundered and sunned, sniffing to make sure they were as fresh as a spring breeze for my sweet baby’s bum.  They might be poop-catchers, but there’s nothing quite like a pile of freshly washed, stuffed and folded diapers in a rainbow of colors!

I surely don’t have the most impressive collection, and I’ll admit that we never did quite get to the point where we gave up our little stash of disposable inserts (GroVia rocks, by the way!) , but there’s just something about making that choice – the economical choice, the ecofriendlier choice, the healthier choice - that made me feel like I was doing my absolute best as a mom.

Ah, cloth. How I love thee! It saddens me that our time is coming to an end, but I have hope that someday I’ll unpack you and fall in love all over again!

Thanks for the memories!

Until next time…

(I just wonder if I’ll feel the same way about my mama cloth when I join the menopause community:| )

Wow. Did I just say menopause?! Can you tell I’m feeling the clock tick away? Come on Baby #2!

To those who say “Yuck!”

I’ve heard it a million times…

“Ew! You put poop in your washing machine!? That’s disgusting!”

My response? How can anything this colorful and cute be disgusting? :D

It still floors me that I’ve used these diapers at least 6 times a day for a full year, which means…

over 2190 disposable diapers that are NOT in a landfill!

(And they’re still in tip-top shape, just in case we ever need to use them again. ;) )

Clean, soft cloth with no toxic chemicals, sustainability, and more $$ in my pocket…there’s nothing “Yuck” about it!

TT Organic Coconut Oil Review and Giveaway! Great for cloth diaper moms, too!

I love coconut!

Let me clarify: I’m not such a fan of coconut in things like pies, cakes or Almond Joy bars. I prefer my coconut more savory, like in Thai food, or in drinks. I love coconut water, and rich soups made with coconut milk.

Several months ago, I started using coconut oil. I use it in my cooking and baking, and sometimes I even just mix a little bit into my oatmeal. It’s a beautiful cooking oil,  lending a faint, delicate coconut flavor that is just heavenly in fish, chicken and vegetable dishes.

The best thing about coconut oil, in my opinion, is that its uses extend far beyond the kitchen. Did you know that you can use coconut oil on your skin, your lips, and even your baby’s bottom!? 8O Yup, that’s right. Coconut oil is a 100% natural, extremely effective way to combat your baby’s red tush, and, unlike conventional diaper creams, it’s safe to use with cloth diapers! (I recommend keeping a separate jar in baby’s room, though. ;) )

So, I was really excited when Tropical Traditions sent me some of their Gold Label virgin coconut oil to sample!

The first thing I did was head over to their  free coconut recipes blog for ideas on how to use it. There were so many recipes I didn’t know where to start! So, I started with Hot Cocoa! (It is January, after all.)

I’m still experimenting, so I’ll be sending some more recipes your way soon…

I’m not going to throw a bunch of health claims at you, because you know how that goes: research is pretty subjective, and no definitive health claims can be made about a food without upsetting the FDA. But here are a few things I DO know about TT virgin coconut oil:

  • It’s made by family farmers, using good manufacturing practices benefiting rural families in the Philippines.
  • It’s certified organic under strict USDA standards, with no chemicals or GMOs.
  • It contains lauric acid, a nutrient found in breastmilk that supports the body’s immune system.
  • It tastes wonderful, and leaves my baby’s bottom soft, soothed and smelling super coconutty! :)

If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of virgin coconut oil along with recipes and more, you can acquire a free copy of the Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil book by taking part in their referral program! Click here for details, then choose “Referred by a Friend” and enter user ID 6878693 for your free book!  Contact their customer service department for assistance, if needed.

If you use coconut oil, or even if you’re just intrigued by its many uses, I have fun news! Tropical Traditions has offered me one 16-ounce  jar of their Gold Label virgin coconut oil to give away to one lucky reader! :D

And, this one is open to both US and Canada! :)

A Friday Full of Good Things

Bah, HUMBUG.

Yes, I can be a bit of a Grinch. I’m not sure why, really,  but I’m just not that into Christmas. 8O

I’m hoping my views change as my son gets older, but the consumer madness (coupled with short, dark days full of ice and snow) really gets me down. I much prefer the lovely “bloomy” feeling of spring! :D

But yesterday, a few things happened that lifted me a bit from my funk and, yes, I just may have felt a twinge of holiday happiness! (But if you tell anyone I said that, I’ll totally deny it!)

1. The local radio station played my Flashback Friday request first, so I got to ROCK OUT to Paul Simon’s Me and Julio on my commute–just me and my big cup of gingerbread decaf! (Usually, it’s Sesame Street or Signing Time songs…over and over and over…)

2. My husband was off with Little Man while I was at the office. Not really a good thing in itself (bummed me out a little), but when I got home, I found out that my two favorite boys took a field trip to a Fair Trade Fair at the local university and brought me back some chocolate! Lots of points for the dada today. He rocked it.

3. The office Holiday Cookie BEER Exchange! Glancing around our biggest meeting room and seeing 24 cases of festive microbrews, imports (and even a homebrew or two) definitely helped with my humbuggery! I now have a lovely mixed case of 24 different beers, and I’m finally at a point with breastfeeding where I feel OK about splitting one unique bottle each night with my husband. Look out! I’m back on the sauce! (Yeah, um, not really. But sampling new beers sure beats the cookies of years past…bleh!)

4. Little Man learned something new that just melted me into a puddle. I said “Kiss, kiss” and he leaned his forehead toward my mouth, so I could kiss it, then erupted into giggles once I did. He did it, like, a hundred times. Too cute! :)

So, since happiness is a’brewin over here, I’m going to pass a little of it along to you! I happen to have a brand new one-size Kawaii pocket diaper in white, and since we can’t use velcro anymore (he’s figured out how to pull it off! ) I’m going to give it away!
