Silk Fruit & Protein: A new way to shake up my wake up.

  

Eggs. Yogurt. Grilled chicken breast. 

They were my best friends when I was pregnant. Every day, all the time. All I wanted was a donut, but with gestational diabetes, I had to keep it high-protein, low sugar, and those types of foods really did a great job of keeping my weight gain low, my energy high, and my blood sugar stable. In fact, I was so happy with the effects of my high-protein diet that I decided to continue it after baby, too.

The only problem? I don’t usually include that many animal products in my daily eats. I’m a little afraid of high cholesterol, plus I just don’t like that much animal fat in my life. So, when I was asked to give Silk Fruit & Protein a try, I couldn’t help but go, “Hmm…..”

Silk Fruit & Protein piqued my interest because it contains 5 grams of protein per serving. Protein that comes from soy. I’ll admit that I’m a little torn on the subject of soy, but I like the thought of balancing out my animal protein with a plant source. That, along with the fact that all Silk products carry the Non-GMO Project verified seal (no Franken-soybeans!) convinced me to give it a go. 

I actually thought that Silk Fruit & Protein would be like a smoothie or milk drink. It’s not. Since it comes in tangy fruit juice blends like Mixed Berry, Mango Peach and Strawberry Banana, I decided to use it as a replacement for my morning juice. I’m off caffeine, so the fruit flavor and shot of protein help wake me up and keep me up, which is a feat these days. I’m to the point now where I look forward to a glass the same way I used to look forward to an iced coffee. (Ok, well almost...)

…AND it is an excellent source of the calcium, vitamin D and vitamin C this tandem nursing mom needs. Total gold star for F&P!

The only problem I’m having now is that my husband and son have jumped on board, too, and now I can’t get my hands on it.My son hops out of bed and wants “fruity ‘tuff” right away, but it’s OK because I like knowing he’s getting some protein to start his day. I pack him a balanced, healthy lunch, but who knows how much of it actually gets eaten? It’s the only soy product we use, so I’m comfortable with it as one of his protein sources, and I like knowing that he’s starting off the day with something substantial instead of sugary juice. That boy is a mover and a shaker (it NEVER stops) so he needs the fuel!

Besides drinking it straight up, you can also shake up your wake up by adding Silk Fruit & Protein to your smoothie. I like adding about 1/2 cup to some homemade yogurt and any extra fruit we have. It makes an awesome smoothie that keeps me full well into the morning, and my little boy couldn’t be happier with a cup full in the morning (especially when I add strawberries. I keep telling him he’s going to turn into one, which is still new enough to be really funny to him. :) )

Oats, Glorious Oats!

We love oats.

I love them, my husband really loves them, and our little man is even starting to love them.

Our favorite way to eat oats is in one of their purest forms: Overnight Oats, like these:


If you’ve never tried them, Kath is a great resource for instructions and recipes. We do ours even more simply, though. Just oats and almond milk, soaked overnight, then topped with whatever we have around. Easy peasy!

When using a recipe where the oats are the star of the show, it’s important to start out with the best ones you can find. Our favorites are the certified organic thick rolled whole grain oats from Tropical Traditions.

(Yup, that Tropical Traditions. The company  known for their coconut oil also carries oats, and a ton of other products, from whole grain cereals to deodorant!)

As you can see, TT oats have a great, old-fashioned rolled oat texture.

They hold up to the soaking without getting mushy, and they retain a dense, chewy bite. Plus, they’re organic! Tropical Traditions oats are by far the best quality oats we’ve found.

Breakfast is a hard meal for me, since I don’t eat eggs or sausage (and I reserve bacon for only the fudgiest occasions.) Empty carbs are easy to find in the morning, but eating them for breakfast is the quickest way to ruin my day. So I stick with what works: Add some fresh fruit, nut butter and a few shakes of cinnamon or cardamom to a cup of almond-milky oats, and you’ve got a satisfying, breakfast that beats any Rooty Tooty Fresh n’ Fruity or McHeart Attack sandwich.

I love having a big bag of Tropical Traditions oats around for savory recipes, too. I recently used them in my new favorite recipe: Quinoa Burgers. If you haven’t tried these, please, please do. I promise you – they are FAB (and easy!)

Burger and Fries!

I have some catching up to do!

What gets my vote for best 3pm snack this week? 

These guys, who made a surprise appearance at my desk during the afternoon slump! They arrived courtesy of my friend who happens to be a registered dietitian, so I ate one happily, no questions asked, and packed up the other for the Hus.

CHOMP!

Did you ever just get bored with your ol’ standby breakfast, only to eat it and realize why it became your breakfast of choice in the first place?

Yesterday, my cup runneth over with So Delicious coconut milk (beverage) and Granbiotics granola, topped with cranberries and one date, for good measure…

…along with more Mother’s Milk tea. I think this stuff is really working! I thought all that galactagogue talk might be a bunch of hooey, but my supply is increasing nicely. I still don’t like the anise flavor, but it’s not bothering me that much anymore. Besides, I never really liked handling poop or having bags under my eyes from sleep deprivation before either, but I deal. It’s all part of parenting, right?

Breakfast was fun. Little F is getting so curious about Mommy’s food, and he intently watches as I raise and lower my spoon for each bite, not aware that he’s imitating my motions with his mouth. It’s super cute, and I love that he’s watching me eat something healthy (most of the time… ;)

I just love being a mommy. Especially his mommy.

Daddy wanted burgers and fries, so I decided to oblige him, ABCGP-style!

I had a bunch of beautiful parsnips, courtesy of my favorite grocery store Produce Man (my Dad!) so I cut them up and made some parsnip fries! A drizzle of olive oil on one side, macadamia nut oil on the other, salt and pepper.

I also sprinkled a few with some chipotle powder a friend made for us out of our garden jalapenos…

400º for about 25 minutes…

A few were a little thin, but the core was really fat and I didn’t have much choice. Maybe smaller parsnips are better?

His burger: moo-cow. Mine: Sunshine!

Fresh salsa, crumbled feta, and basil from the garden, with a swipe of avo-hummus underneath.

Bruschetta Sunshine Burger, maybe? Either way, deeee-lish.

It was time to thin out the beet patch, so I found myself with these beautiful babies…

Not sure what I’ll do with them yet, but this new addition to the family sure is giving me some ideas…

Garden Pea Puree!

The last day of my 3-day mini vacation and it’s going to RAIN? So not cool.

Oh well. I decided to savor every minute of my day off with my boy anyway. First, I savored this cup of Granbiotics vanilla almond granola with So Delicious coconut milk, a few cranberries and half a nanner. I think I may have started a new love affair with coconut milk. It’s SO good (swoon-worthy even), and I love that it’s vegan and high in B12.

Don’t worry almond milk, I still love you and I always will…

The other half of the nanner found it’s way into a much smaller tummy. I’ve SO been looking forward to sharing food!

I felt like carrot casserole (funny, you don’t look like a carrot casserole:D ) Unfortunately, the carrots weren’t quite ready…

But the PEAS were! Woohoo! Some wouldn’t be so excited, perhaps, but me? I’m stoked to make Garden Pea Puree!

I shelled these bad boys and steamed them until soft in my (broken) steamer. 

I then pureed them in my little puree machine, which I proceeded to break. Looks like I’ll be investing in a better food processor even sooner than I thought! :(  The last step was pushing them through my strainer to remove any pieces that didn’t puree. Once your baby is past stage one foods, this step really isn’t necessary anymore.

The little bit I had time to pick yielded 4 servings when mixed with just a little water, 3 of which I put into one of my KidCo. BPA-free baby food freezer tray for another day (I have the food mill, too, but we’re not quite there yet.) I left the puree a little thick so I could thin it out with breastmilk before serving each cube (purees freeze better without the milk…save that for later, when you’re getting ready to serve.)

This puree turned out a rad shade of green! Can you tell by this little face that it tasted pretty good, too? 

Next time, we make the BIG BATCH!

Since Mommy and Daddy have a slightly bigger appetite, and lots of fresh produce to use up, we ended up with a bit of a hodge-podge for dinner  (My favorite! I’m so laid back and unstructured like that, you know... ;) )

A little too yellow, perhaps, but super good with a super short ingredients list! Fresh corn, broccoli from the garden, Low & Slow white sweet potatoes, a yellow tomater, and a few tiny chicken tenderloins. (I ended up giving mine to the husbo…just wasn’t feeling the chix.) Oh yeah, and salt, pepper, garlic and olive oil. That’s it.

What color is your food?

A full day of healthy foods and baby snuggles. Rain or no rain, it doesn’t get much better than that.

My alarm went off at 2:45am this morning.

I do believe that is what is referred to as the “butt crack of dawn.”

I have it all worked out: If I set the alarm for 2:45, I actually get up at 3. I throw on clothes, then change and feed my boy if I can stir him enough to nurse (a lot of this depends on him…if he wakes at 1 or 2 and eats then, the whole plan is shot.) Then, I try to pump a bottle before heading off to work with both of my boys snuggled in their beds. This way, I can get almost a full day in at work and they hardly know I’m gone. They get to spend the morning together, and I’m home by 1 or 2pm, ready for a fun Saturday. (What I really mean is nearly comatose, halllucinating and dying for a nap, but whatever.)

Do I have a choice? Yes, but I think it’s best this way. There will come a day when my child has no interest in spending the day with his Mom. I’m gonna take it while the gettin’ is good. 

Breakfast? Doughnuts! ….just kidding. What I meant to say was: Mammoth Oats!

No, there is no actual mammoth in my oats. I’m not a big breakfast-meat eater. Just a mammoth portion of oats, almond milk, PB, raw almonds, cranberries, cinnamon and a fat nanner. (Has anyone posted the Doughnut Oats recipe yet? Come on, people. I know it’s out there.)

It isn’t actually all that big a portion…it’s just in a flat, thin container. :) A little over 1/2 cup of oats with a bunch of junk on top should keep my tank full for a while.

And it’d better, because these are just a few of the choices at the Cafe de la Office Caf:

-Double Pork Chop Sandwich

-BBQ Rib Flavored Potato Chips

-”Big Az” fried fish sandwich

-Every king size candy bar known to man

-Fruit parfaits! Made with pie filling, cake and pudding.

…and there’s a machine that will actually cook and bun up a cheddarwurst or hot dog for you. :| It’s magical.

To their credit, there is a wellness program that points out healthy choices with a lovely, very healthy-looking, little green leaf. Where might one find this leaf, you ask? Why, next to the Lean Cuisine, Twizzlers (!), SnackWells cookies (?) and a lone container of 8 baby carrots for $1.75, of course. Ack!

Pass, please.

So, after a morning in editor mode, I’m ready to switch back to the more comfy and oh-so-much-more-cuddly-and-yummy mommy mode.

On the radar for today: shopping for diapers (we’re making the switch to cloth!), some garden fun, and whatever other adventures that happen to divert our attention (which, at some point, will mean food!! Gotta love Saturday food.)

I’ll fill you in on all the haps, right after I wake up.
