Pregnancy Journal: 27 Weeks

Welcome to the latest installment of My Pregnancy Journal!

How far along: 27 weeks on Monday!

Baby is about the size of a rutabaga!

Fun facts about Week 18: According to TheBump.com, baby is practicing inhaling and exhaling with her rapidly developing lungs, and brain activity is increasing, too. She’s getting to be a real smarty pants!

Due Date: February 24ish, 2013

Boy or girl: Baby girl on the way!

Currently craving: Sweets. Donuts, candy, cinnamon buns, and oddly enough, McGriddles. I’m not eating any of those things, but I sure want to!

Currently avoiding: See above.

Weight: 10 lbs total so far.

Sleep: Bad subject. (Yawn.)

Recent Crazy Dream: Nope, none. I don’t think I’m sleeping in long enough stretches.

Symptoms? Lack of appetite, fullness, slight heartburn that I hope doesn’t get worse. Breathlessness. The worst thing right now is probably the sciatica that seems to be increasing by the day. Oh, and charlie horses. Those are the worst!

Health: Good! I had an appointment last week, and they’re still telling me that my sugar levels are being adequately controlled by diet. No meds yet. Everything else looks just as it should, and I have a high-risk ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday this week.

Movement: Tons! This one is a mover and a shaker, for sure. A few times, she made me yelp out loud at work. Ha! I’m sure I’m feeling movements I never felt with my son (and from what I can feel, I think she may still be breech.)

Names: Still no idea. At all.

Any baby related purchases?I bought a purple ring sling and a Boba Air carrier. Babywearing, here I come!

Frustrations: The anxiety I’ve been experiencing has been up and down, with the last few days being a real challenge. I’m already having lots of trouble sleeping with my congestion, but my little man has been sick, too, and up at night with a fever and vomiting. Once I wake up, the anxiety begins. I’m not sure why, but it seems to turn into a whole different beast at night. One that tells me I can’t do this, I’m scared, I’m not strong, I need the baby OUT. NOW. It’s pretty scary, but I’ve been researching some hypnobirthing methods, and I’m hoping that helps once I learn a little more. I’m finding that as long as I can get my head in the right place, the panic is a little more manageable, so that’s my goal.

Bump photo?  Proof that I’m still movin’ it when I can!

Mum + Bub: Natural Skincare for Baby and Mom {with giveaway, ends 12/8}

The first year we were married, I gave my husband a pair of pawpaw trees for Valentine’s Day. He had always wanted them, and I can understand why: the fruit of a paw paw tree looks like a small, fat banana and tastes custardy and tropical, sometimes compared to a banana cream pie. With that kind of description, who wouldn’t want a pawpaw in their backyard!?

He planted those trees and tended them, but sadly, they didn’t make it. We’re not sure why, but we have new land now and since we’ve often talked of planting a tree for each of our kids, I’ve thought of trying again with a new set of pawpaws.

Needless to say, they’ve become kind of meaningful to us.

Now, my husband doesn’t get too excited when I get packages in the mail, but imagine his surprise when I showed him my newest discovery: mum+bub, a naturally-derived line of skincare infused with none other than fresh, fermented pawpaw! We knew we wanted to eat them, but had no idea that the pawpaw offers such great healing and nourishing skin care properties when applied topically. It’s all in the papain enzyme, which gently and naturally conditions skin.

“Pawpaw fruit is to skin care what muslin is to swaddling.”
          ~Raegan Moya-Jones, CEO and co-founder aden + anais®

Mum+bub is from aden+anais, the same company that brings you those fabulous muslin swaddle blankets and sleep gowns that everyone is always raving about, so I jumped at the chance to try our their bath products. The line includes hair and body wash, soothing ointment and an ultra gentle lotion, all free of:

  • phytoestrogen
  • parabens
  • added hormone disruptors
  • petroleum oils
  • phthalates
  • dioxanes from sulfates
  • gluten and soy
  • petrochemicals
  • DEA
  • artificial colors

The first thing I noticed was the lovely, delicate sandalwood scent of the tear-free hair and body wash. I nuzzled my little boy’s head so much after his bath that I think he got a little annoyed with me, but he just smelled so good! I just might get myself a bottle as a treat, since I would love for my hair to smell like that, too. I also plan to use the lotion, especially while I’m pregnant, since it’s free of yucky chemicals. I like to try and treat myself the same way I would treat my baby, since whatever goes on my skin goes right to her…and mum+bub makes me feel safe and pampered at the same time.

Another added bonus? All mum+bub products are made right here in the USA. None of their products are tested on animals, and most are vegan (with the exception of the soothing ointment, which contains beeswax instead of petroleum.)

BUY IT!

To learn more or shop for mum+bub, visit the mum+bub section of the aden+anais website, and follow them on Facebook.

A Lesson in “Girl Stuff” from @Zutano (and $75 #giveaway)

A few days ago, I received a really special package in the mail. It was something that I wasn’t sure I’d ever need.

My first pieces of baby clothing…for a little girl.

After our losses, and given the fact that I am creeping up on the big 4-Oh!, I truly thought I’d never have a daughter. But my son was such a wonderful gift that it didn’t really bother me. I just thought it was what it was.

But now that I am, in fact, going to be the mommy of a little lady, it seems that I’m going to need to learn a lot about “girl stuff!” Now, let me be clear: I’m not into gender specifics, and I don’t think for one second I need to dress a girl in frills and glittery pink. But I do want to figure out what kind of clothing I feel comfortable with until she can choose her own, the same way I did for my son.

So, when this package arrived from Zutano containing the sweetest little newborn outfit, the first thing I thought was, “Hmmm…pink can be fun! And bright! And funky paired with fun owls and sunny yellow!”

Easy Homemade Yogurt (Slow Cooker Method)

I’ve made no secret of the fact that my family does not drink cow’s milk, but after several months of managing gestational diabetes without the use of meds, there is no denying the fact that yogurt keeps my blood sugar more stable than almost any other food. It also provides a lot of the protein I need each day, so I’ve decided to give it a regular place in my daily breakfast…for now.

Store-bought yogurt can be really expensive, and the options are few if you don’t want sprinkles, rainbow colors and flavors like birthday cake or s’mores. (Yuck!) So, even though I was a little bit nervous about even trying it at first, I’ve started making my own homemade yogurt at home in my trusty slow cooker (aka Crock Pot yogurt, but Crock Pot is a trademarked brand name so I’m trying to be respectful. :) )

Get ready to be astonished at how easy this is!

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 gallon whole milk (pasteurized is fine, but don’t use ultra-pasteurized)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt with live/active cultures (This is your starter.)
  • one heavy towel
  • one slow cooker

  1. To begin, dump the 1/2 gallon of milk into your slow cooker. Put the lid on, turn on low and allow to cook for 2 1/2 hours.
  2. Turn off the slow cooker and unplug it. Leave the lid on. Let it sit for about 2 1/2 more hours.
  3. Scoop about 1 1/2 cups of your yogurt-to-be out of the slow cooker and into a bowl. Whisk in your starter yogurt, and then add it all back into the slow cooker. Stir to blend it all together.
  4. With the lid on, wrap the whole slow cooker up in the heavy towel. Make sure it’s snug, then tuck it in for the night. (8 hours is ideal.)
  5. After 8 hours, your yogurt is done! It will have thickened and will look like the photo below.

Don’t be alarmed: It’s not smooth and perfect like store-bought yogurt, and you can see the liquidy whey, but that’s OK.

I chose to strain mine through cheesecloth to give it a thicker consistency, more like Greek yogurt. It came out splendidly!

At this point, you can store your yogurt in the fridge for about a week, up to 10 days. Be sure to keep 1/2 cup set aside for your next batch – no more buying starters!

I like to keep jelly jars on hand to create little yogurt/fruit parfaits to take to work. There’s no waste, which is great because throwing those little plastic yogurt cups in the trash because my area doesn’t recycle them really grates at me. This is also a great way to use up those little odds and ends of berries, jam, preserves, etc. in your fridge. Again, less waste!

A little honey and granola adds a great sweetness and crunch, too (but don’t add that until you’re ready to eat or you’ll get a soggy mess.)

Once you do this a few times, you can start to experiment with low-fat or non-fat milk (I haven’t tried it myself, but I have friends that do, and they say it works.) Adding different flavors is fun, too, although I’ve found that mixing with fruit leads to runny yogurt, so I layer.

There are also things you can do with the whey, but I’m not quite that far along yet. Just wanted to pass this method along now that I’ve done it a few times myself. Making anything with live cultures made me nervous at first, but it really couldn’t be easier, and I’m done paying $1.49 each for a simple yogurt with fruit! Plus, nothing beats knowing exactly what is in the food your make with your own two hands. :)

Next up: kefir! :) Still a little scary, but I’m gonna do it!

Have you ever made homemade yogurt at home?

Are there any other typically store-bought foods that you make at home? Please share!
