Anna Wahlgren: Best-Selling Child Care Author {Live in NYC 4/20, 4/24}

Ever since our second baby was born (about 10 weeks ago) we’ve been experiencing a little behavioral trouble from our son, who is now 3 1/2. I went in thinking I’d know what to do. He is my kid after all. I should know what he needs, right? Um, wrong. I’m a little lost. I’m using my best judgement, but I think I need a little backup. In researching child development and parenting books, I came across a mention of Anna Wahlgren, and I’ve been given the chance to read her books and pass my review on to you. To be clear, I have not read them yet and I’m not being compensated for writing about them here – I’m just really hoping they might help me sort out some parenting struggles, and that I can pass on what I learn. Here’s hoping!

Here’s a little preview Anna provided to get us all started. From this snippet, I get the feeling that her advice is in keeping with our gentle parenting goals. I’m looking forward to reading more!

Advice on Introducing a Sibling

A sister or brother is a life’s asset comparable to nothing. Someone of your own generation is there who shares your background, biological origin and basic experiences in life.

No love is as strong and lifelong as the love between two siblings who are close to each other. As a parent your main task is to prepare your child in the very best way for a life without you. One of the best ways to do that is to give your child a sibling.

  1. Make it clear to the older siblings that “we belong together” and “we need each other.” We all count on each other and we wouldn’t manage as well without each other.
  2. The more clearly and reliably the belonging is confirmed among family members, the more strong and intense they will experience their togetherness, and the more positive their community will be.
  3. During your pregnancy, when your child asks you questions about the baby and its arrival, answer the questions but don’t expound on things the child doesn’t seem curious about. Your goal is to provide guidance.
  4. When you are introducing the baby to its older siblings, do so in a quiet environment. This is a sacred moment and nothing should disturb it. This is the time for the child to touch and examine the new baby and become familiar with the baby.
  5. If you have recently had your second child, you might not always be able to call on another adult to help you with your first. Necessity is the mother of invention, and inventiveness (along with a certain knack for bribery) is a quality that you will definitely need. Sometimes the older child will have to wait, and sometimes the baby will. You will learn to tend to the baby’s needs and the needs of your older child simultaneously. Your arms will extend, and you will grow an eye in the back of your head.

It is important to try to rise above the chaos, stand by your older child and maintain your bond.  It should be emphasized that the whole flock should be looking after the new arrival.

5 Steps to Cleaner Indoor Air

Disclosure in accordance with the FTC: I wrote this post as part of a compensated partnership with Best Buy.

Is that…Could it be?! The SUN!?

Yes, it looks like spring is finally springing. ‘sabout time, don’t you think?

I, for one, am totally over winter. I’m ready to rip my house apart, cleaning and decluttering. And, since I have a newborn in the house, I’m especially concerned about the quality of our air.

The EPA says that in the average home, levels of organic pollutants are two to five times higher than outdoors¹ and those pollutants can lead to things like allergies, throat irritation, headaches, asthma and even cancer. Since so many of us spend a great deal of our time indoors, that’s pretty scary. The great news is that there are lots of things you can do to improve the quality of the air in your home!

TakeLessons: A Service You Didn’t Know You Needed

In compliance with the FTC, I must disclose that I was compensated for writing this post. As always, I will only promote products and services that I would personally use and recommend.

My son will be 4 in November.

OMG. FOUR.

He’s not a baby anymore. When did THAT happen? And when did I have to start thinking about things like Kindergarten and sports and activities? It’s a lot to think about. I worry about pushing him too much, or not enough, and all I really have to guide me is my own childhood and the experiences I had. Some were good, some not so much. I tried a lot of things – track, Girl Scouts, dance team, piano, violin, art club – and I think they all added something integral to my overall education.

Now, as an adult who only recently had kids, I was appalled to find out that programs like art and music are being cut from school districts all over the country. I know, where have I been? This has been going on for a while, but it’s so hard to picture an educational institution cutting such important aspects of the curriculum. In my opinion, art and chorus go hand in hand with math and science, and we can’t afford to be cutting any of them.

From the World of Cars: Disney’s Planes! Coming this Summer! #DisneyPlanes

How many times have you watched Cars? If you have little ones, I’m guessing the number might be a leeetle bit high.

Well, I have good news! This summer (August 9th, to be exact) there will be a new Disney movie in town…

Inspired by the world of Cars, this action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure features Dusty, and his dream of competing as a high-flying air racer. Unfortunately, Dusty also has a decidedly unfortunate fear of heights!  My guess is that he might overcome that fear. What do you think?

Joining Dane Cook, who provides the voice of Dusty, are Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Carlos Alazraqui, Priyanka Chopra, Gabriel Iglesias, Roger Craig Smith, Colin Cowherd, Sinbad, Oliver Kalkofe and Brent Musburger. Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer, who both also happened to co-star in Top Gun, are even reuniting for the film!

Check out the trailer here:

With all the questionable programming on TV these days, we’ve come to rely on carefully-chosen Disney movies when we want to unwind after a day of outdoor play. This is one we’ll definitely be adding to our collection!

How about you? Are you looking forward to Disney’s Planes?

Be sure to follow Disney’s Planes on Facebook for updates and fun news as the release date approaches!
