This post is part of a sponsored campaign for The Sugar Goblin. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.
My kids woke up in a tizzy this morning. Why? Because we had a visit from The Sugar Goblin, a new friend who is going to help us get rid of Halloween candy this year. Because with parades, parties, trick-or-treating and grandparents, we end up with scads of junk that lead to fits and frustration for everyone.
What, you’ve never heard the legend? No worries – he comes with a hardcover storybook that gives you all the details on why he wants candy, and why your children are going to want to give it to him. Yup, willingly. The Sugar Goblin is the key to getting kids to actually agree to donate Halloween candy to a very worthy (and cute!) cause.
A few facts:
According to the Wall Street Journal, 80% of parents limit candy intake on Halloween.
According to me, 100% of those parents are likely to hear a whole lot of whining.
That’s why I was game to invite The Sugar Goblin into our home.
It all comes down to a trade – their bag of Halloween candy (or just the unwanted/not allowed stuff, if you’re a softie) in exchange for a much more health-friendly present. (I’m thinking art supplies.) The Sugar Goblin is just the guy to make it happen. If you want to limit Halloween candy like we do, you might want to consider inviting him in to your home, too.
He only gets into a *little* trouble…
Sure, I was skeptical. I have a 5-year-old with a mean sweet tooth who has never once bought into the idea of Santa Claus. But as soon as I cracked this book, both of my kiddos were mesmerized. By the end of the story, my son offered up his own brilliant idea: “Hey, why don’t WE give our candy to The Sugar Goblin!?”
You could have knocked me over with a Twizzler.
I think it might have something to do with the really well-written story and this cute little guy…
I won’t spoil the story for you, but here’s the gist: The Sugar Goblins have run out of food, and they need candy! Little kids just don’t want to part with theirs these days, so the Sugar Goblin Village is in trouble. The solution? The Sugar Goblins visit the kids in town, playing fun Halloween pranks. The kids offer their candy to the Goblins after trick-or-treating is over, and are delighted to find a present in return!
And I am here to tell you that it works. ONE reading of the book, and my kids talked about nothing but The Sugar Goblin all night long.
Just look at the mischief he’s been getting into around our house! One night, he broke into my jewelry box and took my green earrings and headband…
The next night, he stole the coconut sugar and hid in our mitten bin!
He even served up vanilla ice cream with peas and broccoli for breakfast! Ewwww!
Let me assure you, I have a heart. My kids will still get some candy, but The Sugar Goblin will be getting all the kinds we don’t allow, and I don’t anticipate any of the struggles we had last year. The Goblins need it, after all! Just ask my kiddos. They’ll tell you.
