As you might be able to tell, I’ve got family travel on my mind. We’ll be heading to the beach in a couple of weeks for the first time with the kids, and that road trip fits in perfectly with our latest energy savings mission from Project Envolve! As you know if you’ve been reading along, the PE team’s mission is to help you save energy every month in all different ways. But have you ever thought about how much energy your home is using when you’re not even there? You might be surprised! After all, the more you lower energy use, the more money you save on your bill, and the more you’ll have to spend on vacation! 1. Adjust your thermostat. Why waste energy cooling your home while you’re not there, right? While you’re enjoying the beach, turn the A/C off or set the thermostat to 85–87 degrees. Of course, if you have plants or pets who might be affected, adjust accordingly. 2. Forget the fans! If you use fans often in your home, turn them off or, better yet, unplug them when you leave. Remember— fans cool people, not rooms. 3. Close your curtains and shades. In addition to setting your thermostat a little higher, blocking out the sun will keep your home at a more consistent temperature and your HVAC won’t have to handle those high midday temps. 4. Unplug your vampire electronics. If the electronics in your home are plugged in, chances are they’re sucking in some electricity. Those small amounts can really add up! Make sure any computers, TVs, game systems, coffee makers, microwaves or other electronics are unplugged before you leave. Go the extra mile: BONUS EFFICIENCY TIPS Adjust your water heater. Your water heater should have a “vacation” or “pilot” mode. Take advantage of it! Having readily available hot water on tap can account for up to 25 percent of the energy used in your home. Use automated timers. Timers pull double duty as both an energy saver and a safety measure while you’re away. They can deter potential intruders by making it look as though your home is occupied, and they don’t have to stay on all day. Install motion-activated lights outside so they will turn on only when there is movement near your home.
