Anyone who knows me will tell you that I loathe Ranch dressing. It’s not about the taste, but rather the whole idea of Ranch as a staple for kids at every meal. Far too often, it’s used to drown foods and hide veggies, while getting kids used to something that tastes highly processed.

And if you know anyone who works in a restaurant, I’d be willing to bet they know what I mean when I say “Ranch people.”

Alas, it seems that, somehow, I married Ranch people. So, I do buy dressing that resembles Ranch on occasion, like a good, flavorful buttermilk version with quality, natural ingredients I can pronounce. But honestly, that stuff is expensive. So, when #CollectiveBias challenged me to create a new recipe using Lifeway Kefir Cultured Milk Smoothie with probiotics for their #KefirCreations campaign, my wheels got to turnin’…

Could I create a version of Ranch dressing with that buttermilk tang we like? And if I did would the kids eat it? Because I’d feel a WHOLE LOT better about dunking veggies if I knew they were getting covered in good belly-friendly kefir!

Why Kefir?

Originating in Eastern Europe over 2000 years ago, kefir’s probiotic cultures have long been enhancing feelings of well-being. Lifeway Kefir contains 12 live and active Probiotic cultures that support the immune system and balance digestive health. It is naturally Gluten Free, 99% Lactose Free and contains No Artificial Sweeteners and is rich in Calcium. Lifeway also only uses milk that comes from cows that are not treated with pesticides, antibiotics, or synthetic growth hormones. The cows are grass fed and GMO free.

So, experiment we did. My little girl and I hit the kitchen with some really easy ingredients I had on hand, and lo and behold – we created a flavorful Ranch dressing using Lifeway Foods Plain Kefir, which gave it a tangy zip that tasted surprisingly similar to buttermilk!

(BONUS: We made it right in a mason jar, so there were NO dishes to clean up!)

But did she eat it? That’s the real question, right?

I’ll let you see for yourself…

This was not a spic-and-span experiment, but it was worth it because this little girl tore up a bowl of broccoli covered in kefir-based dressing! My husband and son gave it a happy thumbs-up, too. Looks like this is going to be a serious addition to our regular rotation around here, and I’m going to have to eat my hat after expressing my disdain for Ranch dressing for so many years.

Sorry, Ranch. Can we be friends? I mean, now that you’re hanging out with my kids and all, I suppose we should make peace.

Homemade “Buttermilk” Ranch Kefir Salad Dressing

  • 1 cup Lifeway Foods plain kefir (Get a coupon here!)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt (or more, to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon dried dill
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped chives
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (optional)

Place all ingredients into a mason jar. Shake, shake, shake until well blended. (A great job for the kids!) Serve immediately, or refrigerate 2 hours to allow flavors to develop.

Makes 1 1/4 cups. Keep in refrigerator and serve within 3 days.

I can’t wait to serve this with roasted root veggies in the fall. What’s your favorite way to get probiotics into your family’s diet?

I hope they like it! You can customize as needed, a little more salt, a little more garlic, too, if you’re transitioning away from storebought dressing.

ooh, that sounds good! I might suggest adding just a bit more sour cream or even a little mayo to thicken it up for wings. As is, it’s a little on the thinner side.

Oh my gosh this looks SO good! I never thought to use this to make dressing. I love Kefir, especially the raspberry smoothie. Can’t wait to try this.
