Mix & Match Summer Style from @Kohls (I feel like myself again!)

This post was brought to you by Kohl’s.

Something’s going down around here. It’s been exactly one year this week since I quit my corporate cubicle office job, and it’s also been exactly one year since I stopped wearing an office wardrobe. While there have been lots of challenges with all the changes I’ve made over these past months, one of the hardest has been figuring out what the heck I wear now.

Oh sure, for a while it didn’t matter. But now? Well, my baby girl is 16 months old. I hardly have that “I just had a baby” excuse. And honestly, I’m ready to start figuring out who I am again – and my look is part of that. The days of skipping showers and wearing jeans that are 2 sizes too big (or maternity, even) are over.  It’s conference season, I’m booked solid, and now it’s time to put together a real wardrobe I can wear with pride.

My first stop when shopping is always Kohl’s, and since they know that real moms need real style, they offered to give me a hand putting together a few summer outfits. I took a look through their 2014 Summer Collection and was immediately inspired by the Urban Jungle fashion trend they’re spotlighting this season.

“Layering and mixing in unexpected ways creates a look perfect for summer. We took inspiration from the many different cultures and places around the globe and put them together in a way that is fun and wearable,” says Sofia Wacksman, VP of Trend for Kohl’s Department Stores. “Ikat and batik prints are mixed with classic animals and camos in a new eclectic way.”

Fun and wearable? Now you’re talking! I’ve always been a fan of mixing prints and patterns, and I do it for my daughter all the time, but my own wardrobe has gotten extremely bland. The whole idea of stepping back into what *I* like was a serious lightbulb moment – but I need it to be easy, comfortable, and versatile while helping me look like I’ve still got it. You know, real mom style without being “Mom” style, if you know what I mean.

So I went to Kohl’s and spent a little time mixing and matching. Now, if you run into me almost anywhere, you’re going to see me mixing olive stripes with bright, textured florals and a pop of color on my feet – all pieces I found at Kohl’s!

Guys, seriously – I can’t tell you how good it felt to put on something fun and current that felt like ME. That’s what I love about Kohl’s (and have for years). I don’t have to just settle for what they have because they always have what I want! The mix of patterns is exactly what I wanted, but I’m also loving the pairing of olive green with brights, like the pink in the Tropical Mixed Infinity Scarf and the teal in the Wedge Thong Sandals.

I tried to take photos a bunch of different ways, but the stripes got totally lost from far away. So, here’s a shoulder selfie. Cute prints, right? (And hey, look! This outfit is featured in my new sidebar photo over there >> )

Here’s another fun outfit from the collection, and I think the pops of color would work great here, too. Mix and match pieces make everything so easy and effortless, and I’m ALL about that.

I’m attending a conference next weekend, and (almost) everything I’ll be wearing is from Kohl’s! This top below is one of my favorites, and perfect for day or night, dressed up or down.

Even though animal prints are not always my favorite, the Urban Tribe vibe had me looking at them in a different way for summer this year. I had always paired them with black for a sleeker look, but now I’m really feeling the “new eclectic way” Kohl’s is looking at them. I paired this Apt 9 Drape Front top with a bright orange Seed Bead Wrap Woven Bracelet and distressed jeans. I think the unexpected color gives the animal print a totally different, more global feel.

I’ll be wearing the top with black capris from Kohl’s for the conference, but then I’ll experiment with some jewelry in mixed metals – maybe some texture – to keep it interesting. Kohl’s has the best jewelry (and I always find great stuff on the clearance rack!)
