If you want to get to know a person, just have a look at their coffee.

For coffee lovers, a quote from T.S. Eliot. #CoffeeJourneys #shop

I have vivid childhood memories of my mom’s coffee. She would drink coffee at the office, and at home, too, and every cup would end with about 1/2″ of cold coffee in the bottom of the mug. Sometimes, I would ask if I could have it. Sometimes she would say yes, and sometimes I would sneak a big sip. She took it with artificial sweetener and milk, so it was oddly sweet, creamy and just forbidden enough to make me feel like I had caught a glimpse of what being a grown-up was like.

I didn’t become a real coffee drinker until I started working at a local donut shop after high school. I was there about a year, and I worked the 4am shift – a time when the alarm clock is your enemy, but the heavenly scent of fresh donuts and just-brewed coffee is definitely your best friend. Extra cream and sugar became my calling card.

Then, there was college. I experimented with a little bit of everything, as you do in college, trying on black coffee and espresso shots the way I tried on outfits. The phase didn’t last, and I eventually landed in the latte comfort zone. It was during these days that fell in love with older professors, warm mugs, sprinkles of cinnamon, thick books of poetry and dark coffeehouses full of finger snapping and intense conversation.

But, as all things do, those college days eventually ended and I ran directly into a corporate cubicle. Again, my coffee changed. Life was hectic, my schedule was overwhelming, and my morning coffee became nothing more than fuel for busy days and long commutes. Projects and meetings took over, and grabbing coffee in the office kitchenette became something I did, but didn’t think about. On the other hand, $5 coffee confections also became a favorite as I developed spending habits that never felt quite like “me.” Macchiatos were many.

And then there’s the now. As I enter a new decade of living, I can’t help but think maybe I’ve found myself. As a mother. As a writer. And yes, as a coffee drinker. I know what I like, and I’m smart enough to know that I don’t have to go far to get it. My home is my coffee shop now!

I try to create my ideal cup whenever I can, mainly because nobody around here steals my coffee the way they do the food on my plate. Some homemade creamer made with real organic cream, a hint of hazelnut, and a generous hit of whipped cream that makes every morning feel like an occasion. And it’s just not complete without a sprinkle of cinnamon.

It was a little odd to me at first because you can’t see through the pot, but I really like it a lot. It’s so easy to use and my husband says it’s never leaving out counter!

Isn’t it funny how those memories happen? And how our tastes change as we mature! The aroma of coffee is pure heaven to me now!

    • Wendy says

If there’s one thing that requires coffee, it’s a day full of kindergarteners! Haha…I bet they keep you on your toes!

    • Wendy says

That sounds like a great way to build a cup of coffee! And I always put my creamer in first, too. I’ve actually had a lot of people comment on it when they see me pour my coffee!

What a nice post! I’ve never heard of Millstone but I’ll look for it. I take just nonfat milk in my coffee and I have two cups in the morning. Sometimes I’ll have a latte in the afternoon

    • Wendy says

I just have one cup a day unless I’m really, really dragging, but I makes sure that one cup is a doozy! :)

  2. Maria Oller says

I’m a tea person but my husband I a coffee addict, I we are always in the lookout for a good coffee thanks for the heads up!

    • Wendy says

I’m a big coffee fan, but I definitely keep it to one cup a day for the most part. And I do loooooove tea, too!

  3. says

I do a very bad “more creamer than coffee” kind of thing… yes, it’s not even coffee and I’m working on it. Slowly cutting back on the creamer, and even using a sugar-free one right now. Coffee has become my morning ritual though.

I like the expensive lattes and cappuccinos, unfortunately. I am working on taking it black, in hopes of saving money :)

    • Wendy says

Oh, I definitely like them too! But I’ve found that with the right ingredients, I can really duplicate that indulgent feeling at home! It’s saving me a fortune, really, and I don’t feel like I gave anything up! Although I still do treat myself to coffee out on occasion.

  7. Susan B says

An aunt tried to convince me to drink Postum when I was young, and for a long time I thought coffee would taste just as bad. I discovered that it was a whole different thing as I grew up, but I still prefer flavored coffee with plenty of creamer and sweetener. My late husband teased me about my beige coffee.

Hi Wendy! Thank you for sharing your beautiful coffee memories. Took me back to my own childhood and the first time I had coffee. I think Mr. Coffee and Millstone are a match made in heaven. PS: Your daughter is absolutely precious!
