Happy 45th Anniversary to The Very Hungry Caterpillar! {Giveaway}

We’re a reading household. As a long-time writer and literature major, most of my life revolves around the written word. My husband burns through library cards like crazy, and we’re happy to report that the kids seem to be picking up our love of books! My son is even starting to read and he’s picking it up quickly. Watching him read some of the classics I read as a child just makes my bookwormy heart flutter, and one of our favorites is The Very Hungry Caterpillar – a book that just happens to be celebrating its 45th anniversary!

March 20th is Very Hungry Caterpillar Day!

Since its publication in 1969, 36 million copies of the book have sold worldwide and it has been published in 55 languages. That year the book was also named one of the best children’s books of the year by The New York Times, and it has since become a beloved, must-own classic. Today, every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold.

Why it remains our favorite:

We love that this book focuses on nature, with a caterpillar who loves his fruits and veggies (among other things!), but the real reason that we’re still hungry for this classic after so many years is that it never really gets old to kids because it grows with them. First, the colorful illustrations catch their interest. Then, as they grow, kids can count along as the caterpillar eats. Finally, as they learn to read, the simple story becomes one that they want to conquer because it’s already a favorite. This is one book that I can read with my early reader as well as to my toddler, and get the same delighted smiles from both!

    I want to win so I can give this to my kids, ages 3 and 5. I’ve loved Eric Carle since I was a child. I’ve read all of his books and have a collection at our home. We don’t yet have this one. I know I know, how could I not, but he has so many that it’s a collection that takes time. I would love to show my kids, one of his most famous books.
