The holidays are a great time for chocolate!
Oh, who am I kidding. It’s always a great time for chocolate.
My love for chocolate goes way back…to the womb, I think. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t eat chocolate in one form or another almost every day. It’s a lovely addiction. But it’s becoming more and more important to me that the chocolate I purchase comes from a good source. I want chocolate that I can feel good about eating AND buying, and I definitely feel that way about handmade, organic, fair trade Orquidea Peruvian Chocolate.
[Orquidea] was created through a collaborative effort between NGO funding and local communities in order to compliment the burgeoning cocoa industry in the Region of San Martin in the year 1998. Cocoa was being introduced into this region as a sustainable alternative crop that would replace the dominant coca plantations.
Our purpose was twofold, both intended to promote sustainability for cocoa farmers. One was to provide a processing factory in order to create a local market for cocoa farmers. The other was to provide technical training in field management, harvest and post harvest skills to improve the quality of their product.
Making our chocolate near the fields where our small scale farmers’ cacao is grown provides fair paying wages to women in eastern Peru. Other chocolates send their beans halfway around the world to be turned into chocolate and then to you. We stay as local as you can with chocolate.
Fair trade is a top priority with my chocolate purchases, especially when I’m giving gifts. It’s so important to know that my money is helping to adequately and fairly support those who work so hard to make a quality product.
But let’s be honest…the bigger question is, “Does it taste GOOD?”
I can’t say it loud enough: YES! As I type this, I’ve got a square of the Dark Chocolate with Quinoa bar (shown above). It’s phenomenal, I promise. With red wine? Off the charts. And the ingredients? THIS: organic cacao liquor, organic cacao butter, organic cane sugar, quinoa, soy lecithin. That’s it. It’s organic, it’s handmade. It’s fair trade. What more could you want? Except maybe another square…
There are 6 different bars available: Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate with Nibs, Dark Chocolate with Coconut, Dark Chocolate with Quinoa, Dark Chocolate with Kiwicha (Amaranth) and Dark Chocolate with Coffee. Each one is better than the last, and handmade with all natural ingredients. I can’t think of a better thing to stuff a stocking with this season! (And make sure to pick up a few for yourself, too. You won’t regret it.)
