When our little girl reached the 2-month mark, I fell into a common mom trap. I saw my friends’ babies, of similar age, reaching some milestones and I got a little worried because my baby wasn’t doing the same. So I hopped online and started Googling, and that made it even worse. Gross motor skills? Fine motor skills? Hand/eye coordination? Was her development affected because she was born early? Were these things I should be worried about? As it turned out, the answer was no. I put her on her playmat, gave her a little tummy time, and within days she was laughing and playing just as I had hoped.
I promised myself I would put all those “milestones” in their place and remember that every baby is different and develops at her own pace, but I also promised myself that I would make a bigger effort to help her engage in age-appropriate play. The play mat she had was pretty boring, with just 4 clip-on animals dangling down for her to swat. So, I started looking for another option. One with a little more action. And when I found the Gymini® Move & Play, the folks at Tiny Love were kind enough to send one our way!
I was looking forward to trying out the Gymini baby playmat because I had read that it will change along with my baby to provide what she needs during each developmental phase. The most unique feature is the flexible arch that allows the clacky, stretchy, vibrate-y hanging toys to change position. If baby is on her back, you can position it like this, adjusting each toy so it can be within baby’s reach…
Or, if baby needs a little tummy time, you can easily slide the toys (including the larger lights and music toy) down lower, so she can face them.
Yup, I said lights and music. How fun is that?! This adds a dynamic element to the Gymini that makes the whole thing so much more fun and keeps baby interested. I think the music is what got our little lady really interested, and now she gets excited and kicks her feet every time we play it. The lights have caught her eye, too. Each animal lights up a different color as the music plays several short songs.
And, in case you ever need to know, your 3-year-old’s dark crayon will come off the light and music toy quite easily with a magic eraser.
Every time we play, I get to watch my tiny girl discover something new. (I’ve relaxed a little on the plastic toy ban in our home since some toys just don’t come in wood, but since I don’t let her mouth plastic toys we use the teether as a clacker!)
Can you guess how much she likes it?
But there’s more to this mat than just what’s “up”. There are fun surprises all over the mat itself to keep baby interested and engaged. From the soft felt mane on the zebra to the crinkly fabrics and bright colors, there’s always something new to catch baby’s interest. I don’t think it’s possible to get bored! (The only thing I think it needs is a taggie flower. Wouldn’t that be cute!?)
In a short time, Tiny Love has provided us with many smiles, and I owe them one for that. Baby smiles make the world go round, don’t they? Here are a few of the fun Gymini moments I’ve been able to capture…
And we rarely play in the Gymini without our favorite visitor…Do you think maybe I should keep the Gymini around for when they’re in their teens? I bet I’ll need all the help I can get…
