Over the past few months, I’ve discovered one undeniable law of the universe:
A 3-year-old has approximately 1000% more energy than a 3o-something-year-old pregnant woman.
It’s true. As much as I try to keep pushing that jog stroller and busting out a hot dog dance as often as possible, I am having trouble keeping up. There are times when I just need to sit my butt down in front of the TV after a 12-hour work day, but that is often the only time I have with my son. Parking him in front of the tube does not make me feel like a good mama. What I really need is something interactive, fun and educational to keep us both interested and engaged while we spend quality time together.
It seems, though, that another law of the universe is that if you have a dilemma and keep your eyes open, you’ll often find the answer to said dilemma right in front of you…and I have!
I’ve been given the opportunity to check out a new iPad app accessory called Cypher Kids Augmented Reality Cards (from Cypher Entertainment.) Yeah, techy name, I know. But they’re so easy to use. Honest. You just need a compatible Apple device.
Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
Our 3D adventure started with a trip to our local Target (love that I didn’t have to order these online!) I wasn’t sure where to find the cards I needed, but after a little searching I found them in the app accessory aisle. You can see more about our shopping trip here.
Cypher Kids Cards are a great learning tool that utilizes a type of technology I didn’t even know existed. Picture a virtual 3D encyclopedia, geared towards kids. I often get frustrated with this type of product because I inevitably have trouble somewhere with the setup process, but not this time!
It’s this easy:
- Choose from 3 different varieties of Cypher Kids cards: Animals (our pick), Numbers or Letters (or, choose all three!)
- Download your free app from the iTunes store or download it by simply scanning the QR code on the box. (You need to choose the app that is compatible with the cards you chose.)
- Register for an account with Cypher Kids using the URL and clear directions on the box.
- Once you’ve done that, simply open the app and hold your iPhone or iPad so that the symbol on the learning cards can be read by your device’s camera. Then watch the fun begin!
It’s hard to picture, so let me show you what I’m talking about.
Each box comes with 26 different cards, like these…
Each featuring a symbol like this (this symbol is what your device will pick up and translate into a 3D learning tool.)
The image then pops up on the screen in awesome 3D. In our case, it was a lifelike, moving animal along with a whole tutorial of fun facts about each one. Totally fun! Here’s what it looks like on the screen:
And we were able to take some really cool photos with our iPad, too. Here’s our new little giraffe buddy (my favorite!)
How often do your kids get the chance to hold an elephant in their hands!?
Or let a parrot perch on their shoulder?
The best part was watching my son learn about the tiger. He kept saying “Aw, mommy! Look at the little cutie! That’s MY tiger!” We might keep him around…he’s SO much easier than a puppy! 😉
Cypher Cards may appear to be a simple pack of cards in an unassuming box, but they really are so much more. I owe this company a lot for opening my eyes to a great learning tool at a time when we need it most! We’ve already learned about sharks, dolphins, tree frogs and penguins and still have so much more to learn! (If you’re wondering about age, my son got these cards about 2 days before he turned 3, and he was better at using them than I was!)
If my body can’t be active 24/7, I’m so glad to have found Cypher Kids so I can help my little guy’s mind stay as active as possible. The only drawback? Now Daddy not only gets to be the one to run around and play most of the time, but we also took his iPad! Oops…
