Hallmark Recordable Storybooks: Quite possibly, the best gift ever.

Last year, my son received a Hallmark Recordable Storybook as a gift. The story was Frosty the Snowman, the voice was my Dad’s, and the tears that fell when I heard it…well, I couldn’t begin to count them.

Watching my son’s face light up as he turned the pages and heard Pop Pop’s voice was enough to turn me into a tearful mess (and that’s a pretty out-of-character response for me.)

When I heard that “Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump” in my Dad’s voice (which is also pretty out-of-character for him), I just melted. My mom said he retreated to a private area downstairs and recorded the whole book without anyone  listening. I’m sure he felt a little self-conscious, but he did it for his grandson, and I honestly can’t imagine a more meaningful keepsake. (And, by the way, my often-tech-challenged father said it was really easy to do and it turned out flawlessly!) I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything more touching.

So, given that these books make such thoughtful gifts, I’m including them in my Baby Guide as one of the best new baby gifts I can think of. Buy one and record it for a new baby, or give one to a new mom so she can record it for her new love. In addition to holiday titles, Hallmark offers Disney favorites, timeless classics (like Goodnight Moon!) and even original Hallmark stories.

This year, I’ll be recording “Under the Same Moon” for my son, mainly because I love the thought of being able to read him a story even when I’m not there. As a mom that spends really long days at the office, the guilt gets pretty bad sometimes. If I can leave a little bit of myself at home with him so he can listen to my voice whenever he wants, I’m definitely going to do it and say “Thank you!” to Hallmark for offering such a valuable gift idea.

I also plan to record “On the Night You Were Born” for our little girl, due in February. Something about recording it on the night she is born (or close to it) so she can hear my voice on that very day just turns me into a mushball. (But then, it doesn’t take much lately…#hormonal)

If you’re looking for a unique gift for almost anyone this year, think about picking up a Hallmark Recordable Storybook. From moms-to-be and new babies to far-away grandkids and even those serving our country overseas, everyone loves to hear the voice of their loved ones – and now it’s not only possible, but easy, too,  with a little help from Hallmark.

For families that celebrate specific holidays, these are a great gift any time of year! (The white rocking horse is my favorite of the Christmas-specific options.)

It’s a lot of fun to get and give an assortment of gifts items and it’s a good way to ensure that everyone is included in the family during the happy occasion. It’s especially good to remember any other little brothers or sisters in the family, who may perhaps and probably feel somewhat left out by all the fuss over the new baby.*
