At-Home Summer Skincare Tips
Summer is in full swing in many parts of the country, which means shorts, bathing suits, and pedicures for a lot of us. However, while we’re quick to change our wardrobes for summer, we often don’t switch up our skincare routines. Our skin, particularly our face, has some different needs in the warmer months. Here are some easy, at-home tips and tricks to get your skin glowing all summer long.
- Natural Ways to Treat Irritated or Oily Skin
The harsh summer sun can leave some of us dried out and parched, while others get overly oily from the heat. Either way, there are some fun natural masks you can whip up in our own kitchen! For a wonderful cooling mask, mash up some mint and cucumber, or put it on a blender or food processor for a very smooth texture. Spread it on your face and leave for 20 minutes; then, rinse off for a refreshing, pore-refining afterglow! This one is great for any type of skin. Particularly oily skin can benefit from an aspirin mask (it’s great for pimples!): simply crush up some aspirin in water to form a paste and apply as needed. Make sure it’s plan, uncoated aspirin; other types of painkillers (e.g. Tylenol, Motrin) won’t get the job done.
- Exfoliate Away Dead, Dry Skin
You’ve probably heard a million different reasons you should be exfoliating by now, and if you’re not, you should start! It’s great for cell turnover and to reveal fresh, younger-looking skin. Make your own exfoliating scrub with sugar and honey, or to really go for ultimate exfoliation, you might want to look in to microdermabrasion at home. This process, usually performed with a kit or a special microdermabrasion mask, helps slough off dry skin, can reduce acne scars and fine lines, and give you a great all-over glow. Once relegated to spas and salons, you can do it all in the comfort of your own bathroom – for a fraction of the usual cost. - Protect and Restore
No summer skincare tips would be complete without a note about sunscreen. Be sure to apply sunscreen everyday – on your face and body. A lot of people complain that heavy sunscreens clog their pores, so look for non-comedogenic ones that are light and airy, like this great Aveeno one that’s specifically formulated for facial skin. And of course, there’s nothing like some cold aloe on some sunburn to restore your skin. Additionally, a light moisturizer before bed will keep your skin smooth all summer long.
